However, the decision has been made and Peter strongly dislikes the ominous looking trees that sit waiting darkly across the wooden bridge by the new house. The woods could be filled with terrible creatures. That first night, Peter and Harold cannot sleep. The next day, Peter takes action by creating a watchman, Lenny, out of pillows and blankets to guard the bridge. This is better, but something is still not quite right. Lenny needs a friend. So Peter and Harold create Lucy and the four become fast friends, making the home by the woods not so bad after all. Then they welcome Millie, who lives next door and likes looking for owls. This timeless story of a boy using his imagination to cope with loss and acclimate to a new environment is sure to draw in readers of all ages. The text is wonderfully imaginative and the mysterious nature of the woods lends feelings of excitement and intrigue. The illustrations perfectly match the mood of the tale, with the backgrounds created in cold grayscale and the characters popping to life with warm oranges, greens, and blues. The new house starts to feel like a home

Everyone needs a friend even if it is sometimes make believe. Peter finds himself in a new house on the other side of the woods. He can't sleep for fear of what might come out of the woods. Using pillows, he build himself a Guardian of the Woods and names him Lenny. Worried that his new friend might be lonely, he build another pillow friend, named Lucy. The new house starts to feel like a home. Especially when he finally meets Millie who lives next door and has binoculars that everyone can share. The illustrations are wonderful, the story a delight. I could read this book many, many times.

Absorbing Story of Moving and Friendship

LENNY & LUCY by Philip C. Stead is an absorbing picture book sharing the melancholy of moving and joy of budding friendship.
Peter isn’t happy about moving to an old house across a wooden bridge from the dark woods. He builds two pillow people to stand guard at the bridge and keep him company. When a new neighbor invites him to play, Harold begins to feel more comfortable in this strange, new setting.
Stead’s imaginative illustrations draw readers into the setting and bring Harold’s world to life. A slash of color highlights the characters and key elements of the story.
Designed for the primary grades, librarians will find this story of moving and friendship to be a popular addition to the library’s picture book collection.
