Like the entire "Warder" series, "Cherish Your Name" is an interesting mix...

I've just finished reading all the books in the "Warder Series" by Mary Calmes. I know I should feel guilty about liking these books so much, but I don't. They're fun, well-written, fast-paced, and very, very romantic. Which, of course, means they're not for everyone.
In the world of m/m romances, these books are, to me, most obviously written by a woman for an audience heavily skewed toward female readers. In this world I am part of an enthusiastic minority. "Cherish Your Name" is (at least for now) the last of the Warder books, which posit a world in which a group of gay men work as a team to keep the people of San Francisco safe from marauding demons and their ilk from Hell. Although all of these books feature well-drafted action sequences in which the various warders wreak mayhem on the hellbound; they are all really about the relationships that the warders have, both amongst each other as colleagues and friends, and especially with their romantic partners--their hearths.
The very concept of a "hearth" is so marvelously romantic and essentially female. The frequent sexual interactions which form a large part of the appeal of this series are laced with declarations of love and fidelity, of yearning and of wide-eyed passion. Appealingly, and particularly in this volume, the families of the hearths add complexity to the nature of the hearth-warder relationship. The big secret in these books is not that the warders and their partners are gay; it's that they're part of a supernatural SWAT squad keeping evil at bay.
I recommend that you read "His Hearth" first...and if you like that, buy all of the warder books and read them in order. The stories are only slightly linked, but reading them in the order Calmes published them helps to give the reader a fuller sense of the whole team of San Francisco's warders. If these men are your cup of tea, it's a good strong cup to savor.

Cherish Your Name is a special holiday story starring my all time favorite warder/hearth couple. Make no mistake, I love all the couples in this series, and I especially love Raphael, but as couples go, Malic and Dylan have always been at the top of my list, and this day-in-the-life--well, in this world, that is--installment in the series made me realize why: Malic and Dylan, in some ways, remind me of Sam and Jory from Mary Calmes' "A Matter of Time" series, so the loving thing is a no-brainer for me.
Spending Christmas with Dylan's family proves to be one of the biggest challenges Malic Sunden has ever faced. Squaring off with demons? Pish. That's nothing when compared to facing the less than enthusiastic reception the Shaw family give him. Malic is definitely out of his element when it comes to interacting with the Shaws: after all, they see him as the older man robbing their cradle of their much younger son and brother. They're suspicious of Malic's motives and his intentions toward Dylan, and that's a difficult stigma to overcome. But there are times, thankfully, when actions are far more eloquent and convincing than words could ever be.
A bit of romantic angst, a duplicitous neighbor, and yes, a demon come along to complicate things for the warders. A quiet Christmas just isn't in the cards for Malic and Dylan, but it will most definitely be memorable.
Cherish Your Name is the perfect addition to the warder series; it encompasses everything the warder and hearth relationship is about--that the home is not the place but the who that is the sanctuary. It is the name of the one who shelters you and gives tangible meaning to the words family and love that is the touchstone, the thing that keeps you grounded and gives purpose and direction when the way becomes unfamiliar.
Mary wrapped this one up and delivered it with a very sexy and sweet bow on top. This is a definite must read for fans of the series.

Cherish Your Name takes us back to the warder and hearth we met in book two. Malic and Dylan are an established couple now but when they head to Dylan’s home and family for Christmas there are some glaringly obvious difficulties.
Malic is left feeling alone and out of place and after only a few days vows this will be the only holiday he spends with Dylan’s family. He is made to feel unwelcome by people who don’t understand the depth of their relationship instead they see only the age difference and assume Dylan is just involved in a passing fling. Dylan also makes Malic feel unwanted by spending a lot of time with his old friends but as the story unfolds it becomes clear just why Dylan and his friends are so close.
His loneliness sees him befriending the man next door and the jealousy this causes with Dylan is the start of them fixing things with the family. Dylan’s reactions show his family just how much Malic means to him and they soon realise their mistake in the stand offish behaviour. Malic is made to feel welcome at last and accepts their apologies for what they are.
The neighbour next door though has made a deal with the devil or at least a demon and Malic is sucked into his problems. With his memories gone and only the name Dylan on his mind he must fight to remember and get back to the one he loves.
Narration Review:
As with the previous book Paul Morey’s narration was perfect and a pleasure to listen to.
