I was hoping this would give me a solid understanding of how to best architect a Windows Azure solution. Instead, it gave me a good understanding of how to pump out a 600 page tech book in as little time as possible.

As another reviewer mentioned, this book consists of tons of screen shots. I'm not against screen shots when they provide something of value, but most of these screen shots consist of simple web pages. It seems as though they were only included as a way to increase page count.

Not only that, the author seems to have copied and pasted chunks of text from one section to another. Indeed, in some places, it looks as if he even forgot to change the heading when he did so.

In general, typos don't bother me, but it seems to be more evidence that this book was rushed out the door.

In summary: don't bother. Use MSDN and other internet resources until a better book comes out.

best azure book I've read

Azure is evolving and so it's important to get an up-to-date book when implementing an Azure solution. This book is in its second edition already and it shows: everything is really clearly explained, with plenty of sample code. It not only explains how things work but also explains the ins and outs of architectural choices that Azure offers. I'd say it's designed for intermediate to advanced users but if you're exploring Azure, that's probably where you are at anyway. I read the Azure in Action book (totally outdated) and the Azure Step by Step book (not enough sample code; too beginnnerish): this one is really a step above.

I think that if you're looking for an Azure book, this one will be your best buy.

Good book, very poor editing

The content of the book is up to par with the latest role out of the Azure platform. It's a good overview and can be supplemented nicely with MSFT's Azure Labs (WATK) online.

The editing is horrendous! Charts and tables are misaligned, there are a number of mispellings, misuse of words, etc. which makes the book completely ANNOYING to read. After the first 10 mistakes, I started marking them as a game. Had a pretty sizeable score at the end of the book.

Apress, what happened here? Not qualitly work for a second edition...

James L. Outtz obtained his Ph.D. in industrial and organizational psychology from the University of Maryland. In addition, he served as consulting editor to the Journal of Applied Psychology. He routinely develops selection procedures for public and private sector employers in complex situations where litigation is, has been or might become a factor. His interests include selection, training, performance management, job analysis and work design, workforce diversity and equal employment opportunity.

Useful Addition to the Marshal's Library

This volume fills much the same niche as Mansions of Madness (Call of Cthulhu Horror Roleplaying, 1920s Era) did in its day; places for the party to end up during "breathing space" in an ongoing campaign which turn out to be none too healthy.

These places can also be used as places to hold one-off games, or to host mini campaigns with a little work (I got an unbelievably long and lively 14 sessions from Coffin Rock (Deadlands Reloaded Adventure, S2P10201), which others deride as "too short", with only a modicum of effort).

There are seven ghost towns described, along with the threats posed by being there. The name isn't totally honest, as these towns are inhabited, but those inhabitants are the last hangers-on in towns barely alive and there may be hidden meaning in the term "ghost town". There are a couple of Savage Tales set in various of these Ghost Towns an dthere is a nifty Locale Generator with which to dice-up a spur of the moment place in which to adventure.

The production is the usual Deadlands:Reloaded affair, with graphic design to match the other PEG publications in the series, full color and gloss paper throughout.

As with all Explorer Editions it is a perfectly bound paperback. I always replace the binding with a spiral binding at my Local Office Supply Store, which obviates the eventual failure of the binding and autumn-in-bookland and enables the book to lie flat on a table during play, and I ask for an oversize binding to ease the turning of pages.

If money is tight in your pockets, this would be a fine publication to add to your wish list. If you need inspiration and cannot stretch to The Flood (Deadlands Reloaded, S2P10202) (a very deadly campaign from the get-go) or The Last Sons (Savage Worlds, Deadlands Reloaded, S2P10209) (marginally less deadly at first) then this might very well be a book you'd be advised to purchase. If you are a seasoned Deadlands:Reloaded marshal then there is no question that this book should be on your shelves.

I really like Ghost Towns, as not only does it provide you several towns you can drop in, it also provides an easy to use system to create your own towns quickly.

An absolute must-have

Is your posse tired of the same generic western town no matter where they go? Well then this is the book for you, Marshal! Excellently written with several sample towns and adventures just waiting for players to explore. I'd recommend this to any and every Marshall. It even includes a random town generator, in case you feel like building your own, but need some help getting started. My posse has never been happier and the games are more fun than ever.

Crammed with good ideas! One page at a time!

As a psychotherapist, I don't often turn to business authors or management consultants. This book is an exception.
It is great for the one-page reader who wants help quickly. Deep and Sussman take some of the best psychological reasearch and bring the core down to a pithy statement, easily entertained, and place 7-10 or so of these on each page. The reader takes a topic of interest and finds just one page of pearls of wisdom. Topics range from the individual: "Insomnia" or Avoid Negative Self Talk" or "Forgive Your Mistakes" to business areas like "Accept Criticism" "Make Good Use of Time", to relationships and communicating effectively, then to prospering at work and at home: "Survive a Job Loss" "Raise Positive, Successful Children." One then reads the 7 to 10 Yes-you-can suggestions (many from bona fide research) written in simple sentences.
Amazing. I show and suggest this book in my stress reduction and relaxation training group and many buy it.
One holiday season I bought it as a gift for my favorite people. I highly recommend this!

"Yes, You Can!" not only gives excellent advice, it explains how you can make that advice part of your daily life. This book covers more than 125 personal goals and is an inspiring guide! It is set up so you can read just a few pages each day and improve your life incrementally. The focus is on developing a positive attitude in life and by doing this, you are ensured success in all areas of your life.

You will find 1,200 inspiring ideas for work, home and happiness. This book contains all the information you may ever need on how to think positively, act powerfully, communicate effectively, build great relationships, motivate others and prosper at work and at home.

Whether you are thinking, speaking, listening, planning, managing, leading, working, parenting, loving, or serving...the "advisements" will help you to make your life more fulfilling. You might enjoy the "advisement" of "Increase Your Job Security" or "Increase Your Creativity." This is then followed by a list of ideas to accomplish this goal. One idea under the creativity advisement said: "Experience your innate creativity by doing something for the sheer joy of it without worrying about results."

A Classic to read many times

After the ideas introduced in "Think and Grow Rich", Napoleon Hill details the necessary steps that anyone can follow to achieve riches in life, that are not only financial. Dr. Hill refers to the 12 riches in life, where financial security occupies the 12th place.

Using a plain and conversational style, Napoleon Hill explains clearly the most important of the 17 principles of this philosophy. Principles that are available to any average person to implement and benefit from.

The book is full of details, stories and examples for better help in understanding the key concepts that, once embraced and used, will change your life forever.

As Dr. Hill says, not my merely reading the book you are going to profit from it. You have to start using these concepts right where you are and a new life will unfold in front of you.

As with all the Classics, I recommend keeping reading it periodically. So many concepts and ideas will escape to your attention after only one reading.

Valuable Insights into the Mind

If you are unfamiliar with Napoleon Hill. I think it is worth a quick "warning" that the material is getting to be nearly 100 years old, and the style is sometimes a bit dated. Additionally, like many self-help types, there is a touch of New Age influence and feel good platitudes. Why recommend it then? Very simply, I believe Hill has the formula right. Distilled down, his focus is on willpower, self-discipline and proper attitude. Truly what you think and truly believe you can achieve. He talks about the 8 princes (or angels, patron saints, or cosmic forces if you are New Agey) - like the Prince of Sound Health, or Sound Mind. He talks on the 12 true riches - shich as good health, prosperity and faith. But at the end of the day, the keys are willpower, self-discipline and proper attitude. Follow the philosophy and it will help attain those things - and free you to achieve great things.

Extensively researched and illustrated. Many great synth and synthesist stories--indispensable if you're into analog.

David Abernathy has done a really amazing job. This, needless to say, will be the definitive book on Dave Smith, Sequential Circuits and the Prophet. Painstakingly researched and beautifully illustrated with many color photos. I'd spring for the paperback edition rather than the Kindle because, as the only person who hasn't given this 5 stars so far has written, the Kindle edition lacks some of the photos.

I'm going to say a little more because, as it happens, I'm a small part of the story that Abernathy tells and know many of the other musicians he mentions, owned a couple of those rare single-manual Prophet 10s (and was even crazy and ill-advised enough to do a performance with one of these amazingly unreliable early 10s with a symphony orchestra) and have known Dave Smith since he was this kid who showed up at my studio one evening with his unlikely sequencer design (the tempo range took it up into a range where it behaved like a digital oscillator!).

This book wasn't written to make money or for any other reason than just to do something --in this case tell the story of one synthesizer and everyone involved with it -- as well as it can possibly be done. That, to me, is the highest kind of action--doing something as well as it can possibly be done without any particular regard for the rewards. If you're interested in analog synths in the 70s, this is a great read. This book and Mark Vail's are the two essential histories.

I've been interested in synths since I was 15 or 16 (I started building the PAiA 2720 kit-based synth while still in high school), and remember fondling a Prophet 5 in about 1979. So this book sounded very interesting -- and it is. It's very well written and has tons of pictures of the various Sequential Circuits product as well as advertisements and the like. Even though I'm a guitar player and can barely play keyboards, I've had a number of synths over the years just to play around with, and the book has me lusting for a Dave Smith Instruments Prophet 6. This might end up being the most expensive book I've ever bought ;^) .

I've never been much of a player but have always had a technical interest in synthesizers, especially vintage analog/digital hybrid polysynths. The story of Dave Smith and Sequential is very well told here and contains enough technical detail to appeal to someone with a casual interest in synthesizer technology. The author does a great job of linking Sequential's rise and fall with the changing technology and marketplace of the time as well as its own morphing corporate culture. If you're interested in the culture, technology and business of synthesizers, this book should be very appealing.
