Missing Tones

Living overseas, I bought this book and had a friend bring it to me without having seen it. I also bought this before the posted review of 'Missed the Mark' and wish I had seen that review beforehand. Indeed, even though the cover itself has a picture with the dialogue showing tonal markings, the book itself has none inside. I was quite surprised because in reading the introduction it even has a short briefing on the tones used, but doesn't mark them at all throughout the book.

While the phrases itself are useful, I literally had to go through and mark the proper tones after checking with several other sources. This as well as a few typos in the pronunciation and one where it simply retypes the English and forgets to type in the pronunciation bring this to be a mistaken buy.

Missed the Mark

I am living in China and taking Mandarin lessons - I had a friend bring me this book without having looked at it. It has a major flaw - the Pinyin (the a-b-c version of Characters) does not have the tone markings. This means that you will not be understood without the correct tone - I know that from repeated experience. For instance "mai" can be pronounced 4 different ways each with a different meaning - pronounced in 4th tone is to SELL and 3rd tone is to BUY and 2nd tone is to BURY. Look at the learning dictionaries by Tuttle publishing with the author of Li Dong and then get a Rough Guide or Lonely Planet phrase book -they show Pinyin with tone marks. A language DVD and hand recorder would help you to match the tones very well if you are serious.

You can do better.

This book had the potential to be useful but whoever put it together has made a terrible error.

The book opens with a section telling the reader that tones are essential for correctly speaking Chinese. Mandarin, the Chinese language of this book, has four tones ( five if you count a silent one). Without them you can't communicate.

So far, so good.

Then, inexplicably, the book continues to the end without any tones to be found anywhere.

Really inexplicable and, fundamentally, something which rendered this completely useless for me.

This author has produced some good books. This is not one of them.

This is the best book that I have ever read about fertility and pregnancy, and I have read a LOT! I was so excited to see Christa's philosophy of digging to the root cause of a health issues applied to the topic of fertility, conception, healthy mamas and healthy babies in a very detailed book. What an amazing resource for our future mamas!!! I wish I had had this resource before having my first baby because we could have avoided years of gut dysfunction and doctors. Although the title of the book says that it is for women over 30, this book is for everyone who is interested in a healthy pregnancy and baby! A must have for your library :)

Well worth the price

I have put myself through the wringer with regard to the formal education process and this book is like a breath of fresh air. It shows you how to self-educate yourself and more importantly how to authenticate what you know. Just recently, I engaged in a self-education project where I made almost exclusive use of on-line resources and my approach to sharing my knowledge was to write an e-Book and post it on my school website but Race explains a variety of approaches that I might have used instead.

I am at the point in my working life where I am taking stock of my professional knowledge and looking to pave the way for my next step. If you are are at this same point in your professional or personal life then Race's book is well worth a read. If you are thinking about an alternative to formal education processes then I would suggest you look at this book too.

A strategic path to teaching yourself anything!

In a lot of ways, this book is organized similarly to the Personal MBA. The big picture is explained, then a whole lot of strategies are suggested, and then resources are listed. It's also certainly motivating!
Self education is tricky business. You have to stay motivated, accountable, organized, and keep on the same course for a long period of time. The good thing about college is that it forces you to invest a whole bunch of time and money in something, forcing you to work it off somehow. The most unmotivated people I know are the ones who don't prioritize their own time. They would rather be lazy than take a risk. Time is the one thing life is made of! College helps you focus on a path for at least a couple years.
Bannon has a lot of criticisms of college, and rightfully so. Honestly, I don't think professors are the right method of teaching. 4 years is a long time, and many skills could be taught much quicker. Most of the important things I learned in college had little to do with my major. I still consider it a decent value, though.
I guess I'm getting off topic. I definitely recommend this book if you are interested in teaching yourself something!! However don't get it to learn about how college is a waste of time! I don't know why the author spent so much time on that subject...

Basic Armor Modeling

This was the first book I bought when I started modeling 2 years ago, and I still go back to read it some more. The chapters on painting and weathering also appear in his other excellent book, "How to Build Dioramas". You might want to get this instead if you dabble in different types of scale model building. If you're an armor aficionado like I am, this book is a must, even if you already have a few models under your belt. There are lots of helpful tips, especially on scratchbuilding details and accessories. This has been written some time ago, and you may find some of his techniques a bit dated, but this has withstood the test of time gracefully.

For those who are just getting into military modeling, Shepherd Paine is THE authority on model and diorama building. This book includes many of the techniques he discussed/introduced decades ago in the how-to pamphlets included in the Monogram WWII series of models kits. Paine describes in detail his techniques including weathering and scratchbuilding items of equipment. Highly recommended.

Based on the majority text and Greek translation

Zane Hodges was a well respected Greek scholar and NT professor from Dallas Theological Seminary now deceased. This is a publication of his notes on Romans which was incomplete at his death put together and completed by two professors he himself mentored and are respected in and of themselves. It is a thorough analysis of Paul's epistle to the Romans by a man considered a scholar of the Greek language and NT study. That said it is a commentary and Zane's Hodges position on what exactly Paul was saying based on some concrete linguistic proofs. A challenge...but well worth it ! For serious studiers of the word and preferably with some Greek background. That said it is still an understandable text for those without Greek language background.

Terrible Commentary, Not a Worthwhile Read

This is an awful treatment of one of the highest mountain ranges in the New Testament. Through careful sidesteps and strategic redefinition, Hodges has successfully avoided authorial intent in dozens of key places. He absolutely mutilates Romans 8!

I'm glad this work gets such slight notice, it is definitely worth skipping.

Richard W. Levak, PhD, (also known as Richard Lewak) is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Del Mar, California. He specializes in personality assessment and feedback, and marital counseling. He is the coauthor of Psychological Assessment with the MMPI-2 and Therapist Guide to the MMPI & MMPI-2.

Liza Siegel, PhD, is a consulting psychologist specializing in assessment with the MMPI-2. She currently works as a consulting psychologist for television shows such as Survivor, and The Apprentice.

David S. Nichols, PhD, is a respected researcher and the author of numerous publications on the MMPI-2.

Ronald A. Stolberg, PhD, is an assistant professor at Alliant International University and a clinical psychologist. He specializes in children and adolescents at risk and psychological assessments.

must have for MMPI 2

This book is an easy read but has so much information! It is a must have for anyone interpreting the MMPI-2. It goes through each scale and the code types and provide specifics for recommendations and feedback you can give to clients. My only suggestion would be if they included some sample profiles, which can help with illustrating validity scales.

This book was great for a Master's level student. I used it to complete a few profile interpretations for my testing class. Very easy to read and understand. Clear cut interpretive help.
