An excellent book that needs a prequel

This is an excellent book about Islamic Architecture. It offers a comprehensive coverage of building typologies, their influences, and the context (historical and geographic) within which these types can be found. However, I cannot use it as a textbook alone. I need to complement the content with other sources that talk about cultural context as both determinants and modifiers of the built form. I complement the book with George Michell's "Architecture of the Islamic World", the work of AlSayyad, Rapport, and many of the published work of the Aga Khan program.

A Highly Regarded Text Written by a Leading Scholar

This is a classic text written by a leading world authority. It is informative, clearly organized, and factual. It is a book cited and referenced by the best scholars on Islamic architecture. The author's spouse, Carole Hillenbrand, is another world-class scholar on Islam. (What do you think they discuss at dinner?)

There is some confusion about editions. In fact, there really is only one edition (1994), that has subsequently been reprinted to seem as if it is more recent. Thus the book does not include any significant work for the last 20 years. Understand that regardless of the date or edition that you think you are buying, it is in fact 1994.

The book is designed for those who are very serious about the field. It is not for beginners or for a general overview.

Line drawings are nice, but the book undersells the power of the architecture and its imagery by limiting the amount of color printed photos. Also, diagrams to explain the cited precedents would help laymen comprehend the underlying characteristics in a more holistic way.

Apologia has published yet another excellent science textbook. This is a thorough study of anatomy at a high school level with full-color photos, labs that actually work, links for extra study, and an easy conversational tone. My students prefer the Apologia science books over other home study books we have tried (Abeka, Glencoe, Harcourt, BJU).

Pure Vanilla. Pure Inspiration

I will never underestimate the magic of vanilla again. We use the term 'vanilla' derogatorily, to mean plain, boring, ordinary. How completely misguided! Having spent the last week scraping the caviar out of the beans, infusing syrups, steeping pods, and immersing vanilla in salts and sugars, I see vanilla for the complex, exotic, and intriguing ingredient that it is. And, as Shauna writes, "It's high time to catapult this delicious ingredient into the superstar stratosphere where she so deserves to be!"

Before launching into her original recipes, Shauna encapsulates an almost 400-year history of the vanilla bean into nine points, taking the reader from the Aztecs conquering the Totonac Indians of Mexico in 1519 to Thomas Jefferson, then the U.S. ambassador to France, carrying a bundle of beans home to Monticello in 1789. In 1841 the 12-year-old son of a slave devised a way of hand-pollinating vanilla orchids; his process is still employed today.

She details the various forms of vanilla - yes, you can get it in more than just beans and extracts - provides tasting notes, and fields FAQs: Why is vanilla so expensive? How do I store vanilla? And what is French vanilla?

Her writing is accessible, her directions clear, and her recipes inspiring. I find this book to be pure inspiration. I'm looking forward to trying her Tangy Vanilla Bean Panna Cotta and will certainly be toasting with a Vanilla Martini at some time in the near future.

Vanilla Heaven

This is a book that celebrates chocolate's alter-ego. As I have grown older I have come to appreciate the taste of vanilla. Good vanilla. In fact, I keep vanilla beans in my freezer so I always have them on hand. I make my own vanilla extract because it's cheaper and far, far better than the stuff you buy in the store. The only thing this book used that I didn't have on hand was vanilla paste and you can bet your last bean that I'm going to buy some the next time I place my big flour order. I am very intrigued...

For bakers that don't have a ready supply of beans on hand there is a conversion chart so you can still indulge in the delicious recipes using pure vanilla extract which is readily available in stores. Please, PLEASE use PURE extract. The artificial stuff will just ruin a good recipe and when your treat is all about the vanilla you want the flavor to be true. It is worth the money to buy as good as you can afford so that your baked goods sing with real vanilla flavor.

The book is broken down into sensible chapters with recipes therein using all of the vanilla products. Ms. Sever first explains vanilla, its origins and the reasonings behind using each vanilla enhancement. The recipes are well thought out and easy to follow. I can see myself turning to this book over and over again for baked goods to complement chocolate offerings on dessert buffets. It's a great book to add to a baker's cookbook library.

Twinkie Bundt Cake is the only reason you need to buy this book until you try Vanilla Cloud Cake and Triple Vanilla Pound Cake, Big soft frosted vanilla Sugar Cookies, salted vanilla chip cookies.Okay so you get the picture; I am working my way through the baking chapters and I haven't found a thing to complain about. The recipes are easy to reproduce and the results are flawless. This is a well writen and informative source on everything you ever wanted to know about vanilla.

Living When A Loved One Has Died

My husband died at 47 of lung cancer. I went to grief counseling and purchased any book or piece of information I could find to help me through the grieving process. This book, by far, has helped me the most. It was easy to read when my concentration level was at an all- time low. This was written by someone who has obviously been through this experience. I keep several copies of this book on hand to give to friends as the need arises.
This is a book that can be read and re-read many times. It has brought me great peace and comfort over these last 4 years.

Excellent; anyone grieving should have a copy

My mother died unexpectedly two months ago after fracturing her hip. I was her sole caregiver (she had moderate stage Alzheimer's) and even though I was preparing myself for her first being in a nursing home and ultimately her death years down the road, this sudden passing away left me totally empty and void. I didn't know what to feel except that I had let her down somehow. I had always promised her I would take care of her and not let anything bad happen to her. I found myself emotionless with regard to anything except grief. Then I found this book two weeks ago, took it home and read it. This book touches upon every emotion you go through when you grieve. It is not written as a self-help book. It does not tell you what some professionals think you should be doing to continue living in spite of your loss. It is simple. The sentences are short. It tells you that it is alright to feel the way you do. I have kept my book on my coffee table ever since and have picked it up twice already when I was feeling low. I will definitely be giving this book as a gift to friends as the occasion warrants.

An amazing book!

This book is the best book to give to someone who has lost someone they love. I was given this when I lost both my parents and it is now my bible. I have had the honor to speak with Earl Grollman a few times and he is a wonderful man, it is no surprise he wrote such an amazing book. I have recently sent this book to someone who also lost both her parents rather similarly to how I did, and it is already helping her. I couldn't be happier.

Fantastic

This book is much more informative and essential to the working actor than the countless others you can find on a bookshelf. Instead of giving the same advice (which usually isn't good to use in an audition situation), it expounds on the idea that you already have some idea about what you need and gives you real, nose-to-the-grindstone advice on how to tighten things up and give a real whammy of an audition.
As well as advice on choosing the appropriate 16 bars or monologue, it gives advice about representation, Actors Equity, resum�s, headshots, you name it.
Here's a hint: This book is soo worth it, we used it as a textbook in a collegiate course about auditioning.

An Excellent Guide for Young Actors

The Complete Proffessional Audition, by Darren Cohen and Michael Perilstein, is a terrific, fresh approach to an auditioning book. As a young actor myself I found the ideas and suggestions in this book to be most helpful. The exercises given in the monologue section has helped me find new life in my monologue, and has actually made me excited about performing it. The practical information section was equally beneficial it gave some great advice on a wide variety of subjects such as, representation, taxes and getting experience among others. For those of you who can carry a tune the musical theater audition section is filled with advice and suggestions for the perfect singing audition, and for those of us who are not (myself included) I recommend reading that section anyway, some of the suggestions given can also go towards non-singing auditions and are very useful. Darren and Michael have done an outstanding job of putting together a great book filled with wonderful tips that every actor should know and utilize in every audition. Commonsense starts with buying this book.

Simply invaluable.

This is a thorough treatise on the topic. A great reference. Probably not something you sit down and read for extended periods of time, but a good way to prepare for a presentation on a specific topic

Easy to read and great reference when learning about surveillance and public health epidemiology! I highly recommend this to anyone interested in/ working on a surveillance system! It provides a broad analysis of types of surveillance systems and effective strategies for each kind of surveillance program!
