About the Author
Dr. Frieze is a professor of Psychology and Women's Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. She began researching the experiences of battered women in the 1970s and has continued her interest in this as well as looking at dating violence and other forms of interpersonal violence. She co-authored one of the first textbooks on the Psychology of Women (WOMEN AND SEX ROLES, published in 1978), and has edited special issues of journals on several topics, including the psychology of victimization, women and gender roles, and applications of theory on interpersonal power. Dr. Frieze has been awarded the Distinguished Career Award by the Association for Women in Psychology, the Carolyn Wood Sherif Memorial Lectureship Award, a Distinguished Leadership award from APA's Committee on Women in Psychology, and recognition by the Science Citation Institute as the author of a citation classic. She continues to do ground-breaking research on stalking, gender and work, work and gender in Central and Eastern Europe, career choice and love and intimacy in close relationships.

Great to use as a text

I used this book as a text in my Gender and Aggression seminar. It would work well in any Women's Studies or Psychology class that addresses interpersonal violence. The students found it very readable. The research cited is up to date and the research findings are presented in a framework that makes them interesting and interpretable. Frieze addresses interpersonal violence as a personal and a societal problem.

Last up-dated in 1997 this text provides a structured and comprehensive approach to work in a field for which much of the literature is in conference proceedings or SPIE course notes. If you work in the mechanical, thermal and manufacturing design of instruments and products with optical elements this book belongs on your short list of necessary reference materials.

This book provides a good description of the mechanical engineering principles essential to optical systems. I highly recommend this book to any mechanical engineer that is unfamiliar with supporting optical systems design as well as any optical engineer to understand how the mechanical part of an optical system affects the performance of a design.

The unique requirements of optical systems in tolerances, alignment, adjustability, thermal and structural behavior will define the structures and mechanisms that house and control them as well as how to analyze them - hence it is not mechanical engineering but optomechanical engineering. His presentation of these idiosyncrasies of optical systems is both broad enough to cover the vast range of optics components (how, when, and where they are used) and in depth enough to distinguish the important differences in these areas.

Gotta love research methods

I purchased this book for a masters stats class. I hadn't taken statistics before but this book was simple enough for me to track with and complex enough for me to learn.
