Missing very important information

The fundamental difference between node and all other popular web languages is the asynchronous approach. This book merely acknowledges this concept and doesn't spend any time explaining the event loop, call stack, or key differences for people who are already well versed in other languages. There is no discussion of promises on the server side and no mention of design patterns specific to the callback-happy world of node.

Further, this book spends a lot of time explaining how to do things the hard way. It demonstrates terribly messy page controllers and routers that will quickly grow to unsustainable size without once mentioning industry standard tools such as Express that are meant to avoid these problems. If you follow this book's example, you'll end up with a bloated but well archtected app that wastes lots of code space and is a nightmare to maintain.

Finally, the book suffers several small grammatical errors. Normally, I wouldn't note this, but in a technical manual non-parsing sentences can lead to misinterpretation.

It is also worth noting that this book does not once mention ES6 or any of the major changes that are now supported.

I recommend this book only to people who already understand node well but want a guided approach to solving some core concepts they may have missed such as TDD, restful design, or real-time chat.

This is a great book, for somebody who is starting his first application in Node.JS. it explains in detail how to start your own application, how Node.JS works and simple brings you into the world of Node.JS which is diferent from a standart request/thread application we where used to produce in PHP or ASP.

A celebration of life, books, words, and humanity.

Have you ever had a book that you were simultaneously unable to wait for and very scared of reading? That was Matt Haig’s Reasons to Stay Alive [Matt is the author of The Humans, which you should ALL know by now that I LOVE]. I’m sure you can tell from the title a little of what it’s about, and you may or may not have been able to guess why I was nervous to read it. I am depressed. I have depression. I am a depressive. Do you know how terrified I am to say that? Petrified. But I’m going to say it because it will make it that much more clear why I needed and appreciated this book. From the very moment I heard about it, I needed it.

I read this entire book in roughly 4.5 hours. I devoured it. I also cried more than I have probably EVER cried while reading a book. But I also smiled. Maybe not a lot, but it happened. The synopsis says “It’s also an upbeat, joyous and very funny exploration of how to live better, love better, read better and feel more.” I was pleased to find that to be very true. I felt a lot reading this book. I like that Matt mentioned that not everyone’s depression is the same, that you can be both happy and sad at the same time (“just as you can be a sober alcoholic”), and how most people will not be able to see it:

"To other people, it sometimes seems like nothing at all. You are walking around with your head on fire and no one can see the flames."

My heart pounded so HARD in my chest practically the entire time I was reading, just as it is beating hard just writing this all down.

Matt said at one point he hoped someone else would read his words and that maybe the pain he felt wasn’t for nothing. I know it wasn’t for nothing, but THANK YOU, Matt, for writing this book, for being brave and open and honest, for showing me I wasn’t alone no matter what the depression told me, for telling me that life will wait for me, for The Humans, for all of your words, for being alive.

Let’s get down to the bottom line, shall we? Read this book. Read this book because you have emotions and hopes and feelings. Read this book because you are human and because you are alive. Read this book to live. Reasons to Stay Alive is a celebration of life, books, words, and humanity.

I don’t normally like to read books about depression and Mental Illness

I don’t normally like to read books about depression and Mental Illness, but I started reading a book, “Reasons to Stay Alive” by Matt Haig. I read the first few chapters last night while on the treadmill at the gym. I recently found it online at the TWLOHA web site at a time I was desperate for something to hold on to and I was slipping backwards—fast.

Mr. Haig, writing from his own personal experience, does have what I would call a very human and clear approach to the subject of wanting to die, as it is compassionate and easy to read and because of that I gave him five stars. I’m not sure I will finish reading it only because it’s like seeing too clearly into my own mind and just too close to home, but I can see how it could help others. I gave it to my sister in hopes it will help her. She reads a lot of self-help books and suffers, as I do, from depression and suicidal ideations plus other mental issues which our family has a history of, as does Mr. Haig’s. I know my sisters and mine were greatly exasperated by the violence of our childhoods and the suicide of our father.

Mr. Haig expresses what I’ve always said, and I’m sure what others like me (and he felt at the time he was going thought a horrid ordeal of fighting the urge to end his life) feel and know to be true: You can’t see depression and it’s not something that can be cut out of our bodies as if it was a tumor so people who are fortunate not to suffer don’t and can’t—get what it’s like. If it could be cut out of me, I would do it without anesthesia. The pain would not even compare to what I live with everyday. All I can say is besides the obvious of seeking medical help and talking to your family and friends—it’s paramount they have some idea of what you are going thought: Hold on to see what tomorrow brings or what you can bring to tomorrow. We have to fight this together. So many of us that suffer may be strangers, but we have an unwanted and unwelcomed kinship. We have to be there for each other and not suffer in silence or alone.

From the viewpoint of a 'depressive'

I enjoyed reading Matt's book on his experience of going through depression; it's part autobiography, part self-help manual - there is very much a sense of the author putting things back in place, mapping out the topography of his own mind and discovering a place where he can comfortably be himself. By putting it all down on paper, he is exorcising the demons in the darkness by exposing them to the light of public examination.

As someone who has also been through the experience of depression for many years and has also arrived at incredibly similar conclusions after coming out the other side, I recognise completely the numb, bleak, monochromatic existence that he describes; the endless days ahead, the wasted days behind. The inability to realise that you have an impact on others, that you even matter. That anything matters.

But it was this that made the 'depression years' in the book seem almost as turgid and endless as going through the experience again for real; by the 80th page, I really was feeling bleak; I started to recognise that familiar 'me me me' narrative that so bored me about myself when I was depressed and talking about it with friends, and reading the book itself almost became like a microcosm of battling with depression itself: were things really going to get better? Would I really start enjoying this book before it was too late? What was wrong with me for not feeling the same joyous giddiness that all the celebs on the covers evidenced in their soundbite quotes? Was I hateful for writing a less-than-glowing review of Matt's very personal and revealing book, risking hurting his feelings for my own subjective self-satisfaction?

Even though this opening part of the book was bleak and uncomfortable to read, I accepted it for what it was and struggled through, adopting the maxim that sometimes, just keeping going is a victory for positivity. There were times when I came close to ending it all and closing the book for good, but - without checking the exact page count - I think the sun finally started to come out after 100 pages. That was too much for me as a depressive to get much out of - it was a hard read; it seemed to be there to function as a 'window into the nightmare' for those who haven't experienced it. They might find it useful, but although cases of depression seem to have similar themes and motifs, they vary in context as much as the sufferers themselves are unique individuals.

After that, when the book deals with where his head's at now, it gets easier. But these are things I wanted more detail on - there are lots of lists, and very very short chapters all through this book, which make it easier to pick up and get into - but they also make the reading experience frustratingly insubstantial at times. Maybe there's something to this book leading the advance against the taboo of depression and suicide - if that's the case, then I hope it performs the function of getting it out into the public arena once and for all.

There were times, when reading, that I felt that pang of wonder and dread that comes when you know exactly what the next sentence is going to be - and there are times when that same sensation of knowing felt like something jaded and predictable; similarly, there were times when I felt the tone of the narrative to be a gentle one, speaking great truths, but it also felt at later times like I was a bed-bound patient being ministered by someone with the bedside manner of Alan Titchmarsh; oozing soothingness and calm to a poor ill person.

Life has brought me to the same conclusions as Matt, though; that's a sign we're both going the right way.

A very thought-provoking read that isn't the magical work of profundity that the publishers seem to want to market it as - that's far too much expectation to have for what is essentially a very humble enterprise; that of an author working through what happened to him in the most natural way possible for him - via his pen. It is a work of kindness, and of good intention; it is a work of reason, and a testament to the powers of the mind; but I feel that it's being hyped into something that the author never intended it to be.

This book is useful for those who wish to get an idea of what it feels like to go through depression. It would also be useful to someone in the middle of a depressive episode, I suppose. Personally I was both pleased and disappointed by this book - pleased that we had arrived at almost exactly the same perspective on life, but disappointed that I could therefore only confirm my existing beliefs rather than challenge them and learn something new.

Finally, my views on happiness, how to find it, and how to keep it (as Matt finishes in the same way himself):

1) All that exists is the moment of 'now'. Everything else - the past and the future - is in your head. Leave the past behind you; it has gone. By being positive in the present moment, you are sowing seeds of good possibilities for the future; there is no need to dwell modbidly on what is yet to happen.

2) Being kind to others, and having your actions affect others in a positive way will make all parties a lot happier.

3) Diversity of choice produces stress, not happiness. Keep it simple.

4) Don't let your mind tell you downers. When you catch yourself having miserable thoughts, take positive action be reinforcing the upbeat, truthful alternative - even if you don't feel like you are.

5) Your mind can be trained like a dog. A repeated action becomes a habit after three weeks or so. Acquire positive habits, drop the negative ones.

6) Don't judge. It's not as simple as 'succeed' or 'fail'. Just accept and be open to what is.

7) Exercise makes the body happy

8) EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE ALRIGHT.

9) Your good mood deserves protection - it is fragile and valuable. Your good mood is stronger than the bad mood of others.

10) You can always do better tomorrow.

11) People feel happier if they have a purpose.

12) Everyone's life is different. Everyone comes to terms with their life in their own way.

Ultimately I'm a bit disappointed by this book, but I totally recognise the story; I liked it without getting as excited as everyone else seems to be doing.

Will leave You Begging For More

No expense was spared in the telling of this intricate and depraved tale of untold humiliations, heaped upon hedonistic excesses and forcefully blanketed with the wicked intentions and manipulations of excessively messed up, extraordinarily rich and certifiably insane family. This book, with it's clever twists, well developed characters, and highly imagined scenery will run you through the gamut of your emotions, from fear, anxiety, anger, outrage, fulfillment, anguish, hope and more, as you find yourself sucked into each character's torments and small victories.

I'm not sure it would ever have occurred to me to wonder what it would feel like to be tortured, in sensitive areas, by the feel of an airbrush coating me in a decorative layer of false skin so my assets could be best displayed. Or how it would feel to breathe underwater, using experimental technology funded by the warped mind of a wealthy sexual deviant, while being teased by masked and anonymous divers at every turn. Or even how it would feel to be harnessed into a living carousel, for the amusement of others, while being forced to hold a "carrot" between my teeth. But these are the types of things that you will find in C.P. Mandara's lavishly depicted, extravagant world of debauchery, hedonism, duplicity, machinations and revenge.

Once the seeds have been planted, it is hard to keep them from growing. The author's inventive, creative imagination and knack for portraying sexual excess and taboo in such a highly detailed way that it brings reality to them and breathes life into them, will have you expanding the kink portion of your brain and stretching it to its limits.

I won't give away the ending of this dark and lusty tale, but I will say that the culmination of this series, rather than leaving you fulfilled and sated, will leave you begging for more of the same depraved, wicked, tortured treatment, at its masterful reins.

The Ties That Bind: Enduring Imaginative Bondage and BDSM (Pony Tales Book 6) I was gifted this ARC in exchange for an honest review. I loved it! I found it intriguing and the well-written sex scenes are sizzling hot! Jennifer will never be the same after these life-changing experiences. I've read all of the Pony Tales and this final one did not disappoint. C.P. Mandera wove yet another amazing tale that left me wanting more! Book 7 please?? If you love dark, hot sex, you don't want to miss this one!

Tortuously hot!

Romance Beckons awarded me an advanced copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The blurb for this book reeled me in. The warning from the publisher should have kept me away. Mind you, the book is captivating. The characters are complex, the scenes are described in breath-taking detail, so much so that if this were a movie, it’d be up for a cinematography award, and the story moves at a quick pace. Also true, I have not read other books in the series, so I did feel a bit out of sorts, trying to figure out all the relationships, but it wasn’t too bad for starting at book six. With patience, I feel like I got to understand most of the backstory.
I enjoy erotica, regardless of the gender of the participants. That’s important because there are many different gender combinations in various multiples throughout the story. I’m totally cool with BDSM, though it’s quite heavy here, so be forewarned. Non-consensual is not really my thing, which was a big issue in this case because so much of the action in The Ties That Bind is non-consensual. Pony-play, um, absolutely don’t get it, at all. Again, if it’s your thing, awesome, but it kept me from being able to fully connect with the book. And, it ends with what is pretty much a cliff-hanger, and that irks me.
So, what does all of this mean for a recommendation? Definitely heed the publisher’s warning. This is a DARK novel, with some pretty kinky and fetishy stuff going on, beyond the typical kink and fetish. Odd to say, I know. But, it is erotic, too. And it’s very well written. It’s not my thing, but if it’s yours, I’d say read this book. I can honestly recommend it to the right audience. Four stars out of five.

Great review of progress in Paleoclimatology

This is an excellent review of how the field of Paleoclimatology has evolved over the last century. The book is readable with lots of references, etc. It has no equations but explanations are clear throughout. I highly recommend this book.

Dr. A. Jean Ayres began to develop sensory integration theory, as well as the evaluation procedures and intervention strategies that were associated with this framework, in the 1950s. When Sensory Integration and the Child was first published in the late 1970s, many aspects of her work were becoming more widely known. Although she was a dedicated researcher and educator, Dr. Ayres was foremost a therapist who worked tirelessly to help the children and families who came to her therapy clinic. Over and over again, she listened to the frustration parents expressed at not understanding their children's behavior, often followed by relief at having those problems named and explained, and hope when a plan for intervention was offered. Dr. Ayres wrote this book in order to bring a similar sense of relief and hope to families beyond those who were able to come to her clinic. Because she recognized that parents commonly went first to doctors, therapists, and teachers for help with the developmental or educational concerns they had about their children, she also wrote this book to help those professionals to assist families as well.

Since its first printing, Sensory Integration and the Child has sold thousands of copies and has been translated into six languages. More professionals that work with children must become familiar with the work of Jean Ayres; in a time of epidemic labeling and drugging of children, it is shocking to me that more mental health, medical, social work and educational professionals are so unaware of sensory integration and the problems that can result when a child suffers sensory integration problems. One piece I would add is that sensory processing problems do not occur out of the blue; they are a tragic consequence of a culture that fails to meet children's most basic attachment needs and need for movement, creation and stimulation. Children are meant to be held in arms, to run, play, climb and reveal in life, not lie in cribs, restrained in carriers, isolated in day care, sitting sedentary at school desks doing paperwork. Although I had a chuckle at how the current edition of the book seemed a bit spoon-fed, as if people's level of intellect had devolved since the 1970's edition, Ayres' gifted information still shines through! Instead of a pill, try sensory integration treatment and homeschooling!

Literally changed the way I view my daughter

My daughter has dyspraxia which, in the age of autism, makes her the odd kid out in the special needs department. We had been struggling with her therapists because not only did they not understand her condition, they had no idea how to treat it.

After more than a year of very little progress with my daughter in all areas, I read this book, and informed my daughter's therapists that I'd like to incorporate Dr. Ayres' suggestions. So far, my daughter has shown incredibly positive, rapid change in behavior. Her OT didn't understand that the fear and defensiveness that she had come to know was not my daughter's "personality" but a result of her sensory integration issues. This book helped me make that point.

I look forward to reading more from Dr. Ayres and gaining more insights. I highly recommend this book for any parent dealing with a child with sensory integration issues, autism, or dyspraxia.

The most scientifically based easy to understand literature about a complex phenomenon

I cannot understand what people consider "defending" and "dissertation" about this book....
Throughout the book I find an easy to understand language with comprehensive explanations of technical term, e.g., in a glossary (yes, this is a concept based on neurology and developmental psychology, so there is some technical language) and with lots of examples and pictures to illustrate the complex concept of how processing and integration information from our senses influences our physical, emotional, cognitive, social development, our view of ourselves and of the world, and our development into successful occupational beings. And Dr. Ayres describes the widespread consequences of disruptions of this neurophysiological process.

This book transforms the reader's view of children - all at a sudden it's not just "behavior" anymore but you start to ask "why does this child behave like this?" To me, this is the most valuable and unique contribution of this book: to make adults step into the shoes of children with difficulties and imagine how it must be to live with some kind of distorted perception of one's own body and the whole world.

Get it!

This book is totally better in person than would be apparent from the current image available. Not that the image is bad or misleading but it just doesn't do it justice. For instance, the cover is embossed and the pages are thick and sturdy. Not board book cardboard thick, but thicker than normal paper. The images of the dragons on the pages within the book are also slightly embossed. My 3 1/2 year old daughter really loves the How To Train Your Dragon movies as well as the show and when she was done flipping through this book she proclaimed, "This book is awesome! Thank you Mommy!" Two toddler thumbs up!

Great reference for the 2nd movie and TV show

Updated info for the 2nd movie and television show. My six year old loved the pix and detail info giving strengths and weakness. I especially liked how the dragons were grouped. There were a few instances where the dragon was listed but needed further studying. This perturbed some reviewers but I found it interesting knowing that these dragons will be discovered soon

Concise, easy-to-read guide to packing light

Although I've been traveling and packing for years, Judith Gilford's guide gave me several new ideas for packing light. I recognized myself in the traveller who thinks he must take one of everything...as if stranded on a desert island.
There are lists for traveling with children and teens as well as sections on traveling to various terrrain and climates. Lists are provided to assist you in packing thoroughly, but wisely. A handy guide helps with the invariable stains you'll obtain while noshing, trekking and exploring.
There is a section with faq the writer has received in her packing seminars as well as tips from readers/customers such as wearing-rather than lugging-your heaviest outfit, coat or sweater and shoes. A reference chapter gives ideas on wrinkle shrugging fabrics as well as a valuable resource guide for items mentioned in the book, and companies that provide luggage, clothing and accessories.
With Gilford's bundling system, it is possible to pack for a week's travel in a carry-on bag, with minimal wrinkling and no need to check luggage. Road Warrior learned a few tips!

I love this book! I travel every week and I always find the packing for the trip to be the worst! I absolutely dread it each week. This book helped change that!
The different checklists are great for getting organized AND making sure that you pack every thing you need for your trip.
The bundling system is so incredibly simple and easy... with no wrinkles once you arrive at your destination.
The last part of this book is chock full of good reading on how to pack those bulky items such as shoes and winter sweaters and coats.
With all the security requirements with the airlines now (and tough limits on carry-ons), I really recommend this book... and I'm a road warrior that should've figured out how to pack by now!

Don't need travel iron anymore!!

After reading this book I found I could pack more "stuff" and arrive at my destination with wrinkle free clothing! The "bundle" method is a great idea. I recently bought this same book for my daughter-in-law and a friend's daughter who was traveling abroad.
