About the Author

Gregory C. Chow is Class of 1913 Professor of Political Economy, Professor of Econometrics, and Director of the Econometric Research Program at Princeton University. He has also advised the Prime Ministers of Taiwan and China on economic policy and reform. He is the author of numerous books, including Analysis and Control of Dynamic Economic Systems (1975), Econometrics (1983), and Understanding China's Economy (1994).

An alternative to Lucas, Sargent and recursive methods

Most grad students are taught to solve dynamic equilbrium problems using recursive methods. Two of the prominent books that I am familiar with are:
* Thomas Sargent's Dynamic Macroeconomics
* Lucas and Stokey's Recursive Methods in Economic Dynamics
(Note: I see that Sargent has another volume out, Recursive Macroeconomic Theory, with Lars Ljungqvist.)
Chow's book presents a Lagrangian method for dynamic optimization. This is a far easier approach than recursive methods, as anyone who is familiar with simple calculus will attest. Chow presents the method then --and this is the real value of this book-- systematically applies it to familiar market equilibrium, financial, business cycle, game theory, and growth models (all dynamic, of course).
BENEFITS:
* Chow's Lagrangian method removes mathematical obstacles to understanding important macroeconomic models
* Chow is a good writer, and this book is far easier to understand than the two books listed above
* This is a great reference for grad students looking for foundations for your own research

This is an excellent book on all kinds of imaging techniques for brain, urologic, cardiac, and orthopedic surgery. US, MR, CT, optical and PET technologies are incorporated in the discussion. The diagnostics, physics, and mathematical modeling are examined in detail. Engineers, physicists, students, and surgeons will find the full color pictures helpful. I highly reccommend this for surgical approaches employed in Minimally invasive surgeries, i.e. to be a guide for mapping and planning.

Hardware and software are included in this textbook. Shifting and changes in positioning require 4D Graphics (x,y,z), and time elements are looked at also.

The true sequel to Aliens.

The earth hive trilogy is a brilliant continuation to Aliens, three novels that tell of the ultimate terror of the xenomorphs reaching earth and the few survivors desperate to survive. Plenty of twists and turns, good characterization...oh did I mention the Alien homeworld. If you love the franchise then buy this book today.

The Steve Perry "Aliens" trilogy - on Kindle at last!

I originally read these books in high school, and loved 'em. I've been requesting Amazon get these books released on Kindle for years, and to get them all for the price of one was an amazing deal (at least to me).

Set roughly ten years after the movie "Aliens", veteran sci-fi writer Steve Perry tells a great story of the aliens and their escape into the wilds on Earth, while disgraced Colonial Marine Sgt. Wilks and Billie, a female survivor from an alien invasion of another colony which occurred around the same time as the crisis in the second movie. Surprisingly, Ripley shows up for the third book. How? Read and find out. ;-)

That's all I'm going to reveal in this review about the plot of this book trilogy. As with any of the Alien movies, Perry does not shy away from the graphic violence that comes from dealing with a deadly species like the aliens. He also developed his characters into real and believable people who fit right into the mythos of the Alien stories.

As for sexual content, yes - there are a few scenes in Earth Hive and The Female War (which Perry wrote with his daughter). Perry does not shy away from detail necessary to provide a real you-are-there feeling, but doesn't go into blatantly disgustingly graphic.

Any sign of Predators? No.
Any Engineers (from the movie "Prometheus")? Ehhh . . . yes and no. There is a creature that Perry developed, based off the appearance of the fossilized Engineer pilot - and since these books were released long before "Prometheus", which revealed that the pilot was in a flight suit, the creature in this book looks very different - but it does fly an Engineer ship. Since this continuity error is the result of a new movie, and not author's lack of attention, I can overlook it.

Whether or not this story continues in the upcoming Vol. 2 Omnibus, I don't know. I haven't read those.

Good novelizations of some CLASSIC comics of the 90's!

While well written, it's worth noting that Steve Perry didn't come up with these characters, or situations.

These are novelizations of the first three Dark Horse Comics series...all written by Mark Verheiden, and drawn by different artists...and I highly suggest that anyone who likes these stories check out the graphic novels.

Aliens Omnibus Volume 1

It will probably not surprise anyone to find out that "Wilkes" was originally Corporal HICKS, and "Billie" was originally Newt.
Dark Horse changed their names in the reprints of the comics, after Alien 3 was released.

About the Author
Robert B. Parker was the author of seventy books, including the legendary Spenser detective series, the novels featuring Police Chief Jesse Stone, and the acclaimed Virgil Cole Everett Hitch westerns, as well as the Sunny Randall novels. Winner of the Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Award and long considered the undisputed dean of American crime fiction, he died in January 2010.

Thoughtful thriller

Although somewhat dated, "Fail-Safe" is a taught novel that ranks among the best Cold War thrillers. The characters have real depth, and the writing moves at a brisk, tense...but not hurried pace. In fact, the authors do such an excellent job of cranking up the tension in one long, slow pull, I felt almost physically drained upon finishing it.
Of particular note, the authors have succeeded in writing a novel that operates on two levels. In the tradition of "On the Beach" by Shute, "Fail-Safe" is both a gripping novel, and a thoughtful commentary on the almost absurd politics of the Cold War. The authors examine what was at the time a very real concern about the hair-trigger between peace and global destruction; the concern that machines were supplanting humans. In so doing they reveal more about the mentality of the Cold War than many works of history.
In the end, "Fail-Safe" does a superb job of capturing the terror of the Cold War. It succeeds as both a thriller, and as a work of thought provoking literature. Enjoy!

a book that makes you think

I had read this book maybe 40 years ago when I was in school. I recommended it to my 17 year old son for a book report in light of all the conflicts in our world today. He not only was "in awe" after reading the book, he got an A on his report. If you read the book, follow it up with the movie... the original (black and white) NOT the remake! Larry Hagman plays the role of Buck superbly!!!!!

No better Cold War thriller was ever written

Although it is now close to FORTY years old, "Fail-Safe" puts today's crop of political novelist to shame. A more compelling story has not been written.
The story is simple: a mechanical error send a group of U.S. Bombers towards the Soviet Union. The President tries mightily to recall them, in an effort to avoid the inevitable Soviet retaliation. He has to make an incredible sacrifice to keep the world from World War III.
Forget about the incredibly complex turns of my favorite writer of this genre, F. Forsyth. T. Clancy 's interwoven stories and mind numbing detail does not even come close to this simple, chilling story. Could it happen? Of course not, because of the fail-safe system. Or so they tell us...
Like Coke, this is the real thing.
