Thrilling, gripping adventure story, a must read

I stumbled across this book randomly in a very outdated ship's library where most of the books were from the 1960's-70's. And I'm glad I did.

For anyone interested in travel and adventure this book is immediately interesting, gripping you right from the start. The greatest thing about this book, in addition to the adventures, is the author's (also the translator's) writing style. The author speaks so matter-of-factly and with a touch of dry humor about all these fantastic adventures that it makes the reader that more amazed by them when you think about what is really happening. Though it might be a cliche, the author makes you feel you are right there with them, not just a spectator but almost an active participant.

I have since bought this book myself and read it twice, it is a quick read. In fact I left the old copy where I found it on the chance that someone else will stumble across it as well, and enjoy it as much as I have.

The author himself is quite a character, sort of a French academic Indiana Jones as another reviewer put it, and has written another book that I plan to read. Highly recommended!

You won't believe this story.............

I read Panjamon in the sixties. I had trouble finding it on the internet. Perhaps one adventure like this is enough for one lifetime.

Lost in the Borneo interior during the 60's, the author comes across some very different looking natives; are they friendly?, well, sort of, they shoot him with a paralyzing, non-deadly, dart, then haul him back to the tribe for 3 years.

A multitude of perils and adventures ensue including a marriage ritual requiring being put naked into a hole filled with fire ants then immediately being banished to the forest to survive alone, cold, and infected, with no cell phone.

If you're an adventure and travel reader, check this out.

It's a remarkable tale and it's incredible that the author survived.

Unique Insights into the Bornean Rain Forest

This is one of the very rare books offering insight into the life of indigenous people before civilization even touched them. The Kajan and Iban peoples of Borneo were still living as hunters at stone age level in the impenetrable forests of Borneo when the author visited both tribes and spent considerable time in an Iban village of headhunters. He went through the initialization rituals and married an Iban woman, learned to hunt by blowpipe and appreciate the rich and lighthearted life of the primitive.
This book offers views that deeply affected my outlook on our species. Still, the author is a zoologist and had no anthropologist ambitions whatsoever to begin with. I rate it equal to Jean Liedloffs books. Too bad it is out of print, possibly because it was put in the "travel and adventure" section.

Excellent training tool

Wonderful puzzles without many particular themes, so a great way to train in imagination and visualization. I have not found any mistakes in the book. Also available as an iPad app I strongly recommend. I am a 1700 player and it has definitely helped my play.

Philip Cooke is senior lecturer in the School of Humanities at the University of Strathclyde. He is the author of many works on the Italian resistance, including The Italian Resistance: An Anthology and The Legacy of the Italian Resistance. He is also joint editor of the quarterly journal Modern Italy. He lives in Glasgow, Scotland.

Ben H. Shepherd is a reader in history at Glasgow Caledonian University. He specializes in the military history of Germany and Austria during the first half of the twentieth century, with particular focus on the origins and conduct of counterinsurgency warfare. He is the author of War in the Wild East: The German Army and Soviet Partisans and Terror in the Balkans: German Armies and Partisan Warfare. In a nutshell, what is effective altruism and how does it differ from ordinary charitable giving?

Effective altruism is both an emerging movement and the set of ideas behind that movement. The basic idea is that to live a fully ethical life, we should seek to do the most good we can. To discover what will do the most good, we need to use reason and evidence. In contrast, two-thirds of donors to charity do no research at all into the organizations to which they donate—they are moved by images that play on their emotions, but give no indication whether the organization is effective at what it claims to be doing.

Aren’t we all, at the core, self-interested?

The book introduces readers to many of the men and women who are practicing effective altruism. What they are doing will startle many readers—choosing their careers so that they can donate more, and donating half their incomes to effective charities. Yet typically they don’t think of themselves as making a sacrifice. They find their lives more rewarding than they were before they made these choices. So it may not be a question of denying self-interest, but of a different understanding of what really is in one’s own interests. 
Can effective altruism change the world?
 
I find the stories I tell in this book immensely encouraging. There are not many effective altruists yet, but they are already changing the world, and their impact is growing.

About the Author
Peter Singer is Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics, Princeton University, and Laureate Professor, School of Historical and Philosophical Studies, University of Melbourne. He is the author of more than twenty books including Animal Liberation, Practical Ethics, and The Life You Can Save. He divides his time between New York City and Melbourne, Australia.

An excellent introduction

Disclosure: I give about 15% of my income to some of the charities discussed in this book, and I plan to give that much or more for the foreseeable future. I read The Most Good You Can Do as a committed effective altruist.

Even if I hadn't, though, I think I'd have found this book compelling. The first ten or so chapters are uniformly excellent: My favorite pages were those telling the stories of dozens of people (from tech CEOs to low-income graduate students) who live extraordinarily generous lives. Singer also gives a more fluid introduction to the concepts behind effective altruism than you'd find by just reading blog posts or newspaper articles written by a variety of authors. He uses very little technical philosophy and a lot of plain language -- I finished the book in a couple of hours, and enjoyed every minute.

Why only four stars? Near the end of the book, Singer begins to explore some of the in-depth causes that certain effective altruists support. These chapters were interesting to me, but they're also filled with numbers and speculative calculation and feel "colder" than the rest of the book -- they won't appeal to everyone. Still, this is an excellent book overall, and I'd recommend it to effective altruists and non-EAs alike.

Challenges us to think deeply about our impact

Whether you're completely new to Peter Singer or are very familiar with his work, The Most Good You Can Do is highly informative and thought-provoking. The book builds on his previous work, but offers many profiles of people living out the values of effective altruism and explores practical and psychological issues around how we can do the most good in the world, in addition to the philosophical issues, making this book easily readable.
Importantly, he shows that doing good things for the world altruistically is perfectly compatible with making yourself happy -- in fact, it's complementary. Some takeaways you can expect to get from this book are:
- explanation of what effective altruism is, and the growth of the movement
- real examples of ordinary people who have used the principles of effective altruism to accomplish extraordinary good
- how to balance your own interests and needs against the moral duty to relieve suffering in the world
- altruistic strategy on finding a career that maximizes social impact
- altruistic strategy on choosing causes and charities to support
- balancing between causes with concrete, predictable outcomes (e.g. preventing malaria) and those with highly uncertain but potentially very high benefits (such as political advocacy)
If you want to be challenged to think deeply about how you can best use your skills, time, or money to improve the world, this book will help you do that.

Nice message, but disorganized and not enough good content to warrant the 18$ pricetag

I think Peter Singer is a great guy, based on his philosophies, and I also think the message in this book is a good one. I believe that we should all be trying to reduce the suffering in the world by being vegan and donating to charities.

That being said, I don't believe a book was the best medium for this. It is really short for the price you pay, and it seems to repeat itself over and over again. Basically, "Hey, you should donate to charity. Look at these 234982304 people who donate to charity. This is how they donate to charity." Then at the end of the book there are a few more essays that are tangentially related.

Ultimately, the book, to me, comes off as disorganized and far too simply written for the ~18$ price tag.

The basic message, which I said above in quotes, could have been eloquently written into a journal/newspaper article or a speech (which I believe he already did via TED). There just isn't enough content, especially non-fluff content (e.g. a million unnecessary mini biographies of people who donate money), to warrant a book, let alone an 18$ book.

I like Peter Singer, but I would save your money and not purchase this. It seems as if Singer just wants to milk this (good, but small) message for as much as he can. I would have returned it but I wrote on one of the pages, so I ended up tossing it after I finished. At least Singer donates a good amount of the money I wasted on this book to charity, if what he says in his book is true!

Don't buy the book unless you are prepared to lease the software.

i bought the book after checking the authors website (www.whentotrade.com) . Although the author develops an interesting approach to cycle analysis regarding financial markets forecasting reading the book is a waste of time and money unless the reader is prepared to buy / lease
the software developed by the author. There is no code in the book , just examples from the software.

I usually pass on writing a lot of reviews. This book is nothing but a promo for his expensive software. There is not a single word devoted to illuminating the reader about cycles. This book is a complete fraud. Do not waste your money.

5 Stars Is Not Enough

It is my strong opinion that this is a very important book.
In fact, after being a serious student of cyclic analysis for many years including the work of JM Hurst, Walter Bressert, Ray Merriman, and the recent contributions of David Hickson, I will go out on a limb and rank the thought process behind this book as powerful as that of Hurst.
Hurst work was/is groundbreaking; problem is Hurst analysis relies on averages of cycle length and involves some subjective interpretation.
Lars has devised a mathematical approach to study real world cycles; cycles that expand and contract and sometimes invert and follow them in real time. And his approach is quite objective. For me, he provides a critical missing link.
This is a very clearly written book and I found the explanations and examples very easy to follow. But I am very familiar with this field so it might be a good idea to acquire some basic cyclic background before entering this world.
In any case, I give Lars 6 stars, 5 for his discoveries and an extra for his decision to share them
