Very disappointing.. The author is repeating the same issues over and over again. The whole book could be fitted on one page.. actually it is.. on government official web page - for free.. The price wasn't very high, but again.. why paying for something that is available for free.

A good issue over all

Overall, the stories in July 2015's issue were well polished and written. I found a few very minor mistakes - places where just a little editing would have made it stronger overall.

I liked the stories - they were clear, easy to follow, and entertaining. That seems to be the major selling point of eFiction - it's entertaining, with stories that read quickly.

Gr 6–8—Wiviott begins this affecting novel in verse at the gates of the Auschwitz death camp. The fictionalized story is based upon true events and focuses on a group of young women who were forced to work at the munitions factory at the camp. Readers meet Zlatka and Fania, the two main characters, who become best friends. Along with them are many other young girls caught in this dehumanizing web. It is a small but incredibly courageous act of kindness and defiance that gives the book its title; Zlatka and the girls create a card for Fania's 20th birthday. Though the girls lose their families, identities, dreams, and youth, each finds through the others comfort and the will to survive. Along with the depiction of the daily horrors of the camp, there are memories of a past, rich Jewish life filled with caring families, religious traditions, words from scripture, and other reminders of a time when normal life was joyful. In a postscript, the author details what is historical fact and what is fictionalized. A glossary gives the meanings of Yiddish and Jewish words. A beautifully told true story about brave young women who refused to be victims and walked out of Auschwitz with their heads unbowed. Meg Wiviott is the author of Paper Hearts, which was a YALSA Best Book of the Year, a BFYA pick, and an Amelia Bloomer Pick. She is also the author of the award-winning picture book Benno and the Night of Broken Glass. She was a history major at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, earned a Master’s in Education from Northwestern University, and graduated with an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from The Vermont College of Fine Arts. PAPER HEARTS is a heart-wrenching read, told from the dual perspectives of Fania and Zlatka and written in poetry-like prose.

PAPER HEARTS, the first young adult novel of Meg Wiviott, tells the story of Zlakta and Fania, two Polish Jewish girls who meet in the concentration camp Auschwitz after becoming separated from their families during World War II. The girls eventually become best friends, along with Bronia, Guta and Giza. The girls look out for each other as they face the atrocities of Auschwitz and become a family, sharing their measly portions of bread with each other and illegally bartering for medicine when Zlatka becomes ill. When Fania’s 20th birthday nears, Zlatka secretly constructs a paper heart for her from smuggled supplies, representing everything the Nazis long to crush: hope, love and freedom.

Based on the true story of Fania and Zlatka’s friendship, PAPER HEARTS is a heart-wrenching read, told from the dual perspectives of Fania and Zlatka and written in poetry-like prose. The novel is especially tragic because it is based on a real story, including often gruesome details that the reader must acknowledge as true. Still, the friendship between Fania and Zlakta will lift the reader’s spirits as they continue to care about each other and take risks for each other, even when they would be safer only looking out for themselves.

Zlakta’s strong-willed personality and bravery complements Fania’s limitless kindness perfectly, making their friendship easily the best part of PAPER HEARTS. The sense of hope that persists throughout the novel reminds the reader that even in the darkest times, human compassion continues to exist, and even thrive. The novel is well researched, and although Wiviott fills in gaps with her imagination, the story of Fania and Zlakta feels intact. Today, the paper heart Zlakta made for Fania is on display in the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre, lending even more relevance to the novel.

Because the novel is written in a poetry-like fashion, the 300-plus pages read quickly. Wiviott gives little detail about Fania’s or Zlatka’s families or build-up before the girls reach Auschwitz, which in some ways feels like a missed opportunity. Although it is tragic when the girls are separated from their families, it would feel weightier if the reader was given more time to grow attached to both girls’ ways of life before the Holocaust. It is also hard to feel a real sense of what either girl was like before the Holocaust. For example, although Zlatka mentions winning a prize to take a train to Warsaw, she never mentions why she won the prize. In Fania’s case, she just mentions she has always been a “good girl.” It is possible, though, that Wiviott could not find much about the girls or their families before the Holocaust and did not want to create details that would erase Zlatka’s and Fania’s true identities.

Although both girls are very likeable throughout the novel, it is difficult to detect character growth, which is frustrating because I’m certain that the Holocaust would have greatly changed both girls. This also holds true when describing Bronia, Guta, and Giza, Although their names are mentioned, we don’t learn much more, making it impossible to understand what their personalities are like.

Overall, PAPER HEARTS is a quick, emotional read that is perfect for readers who already have some background knowledge on the Holocaust and World War II. Although the novel can be difficult to keep reading because of the horrific topic, the hopeful feel of love and friendship that continues throughout PAPER HEARTS makes it well worth the read.

Tears! Many Tears!

This book just about broke my heart as books like this too. As stated in the blurb, it's based on the true story of Zlatka and Fania, there are other girls in their group. The author got information from family, etc. The paper heart that was given to Fania by Zlatka is in the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre. I really feel for these girls and all of the people that were stuck in Auschwitz, never knowing if they were going to be alive from minute to minute. I have photo's and links in my full reviews.

Amazing read!

Oh, how I love that an author can take a dreary subject matter and pull it together using verse. It’s the flow of the words, the emotions that pours out, and the rhythm as you read that the author can achieve using specific words and the arrangement of those words to create a lasting impression. I can’t forget to mention the energy that you feel as you read, I am amazed. I found myself absorbed, settling into each chapter as the girls tried to adjust to their new surroundings. The urgency of their story and the love and drama that came forth through the words really spoke to me. The card that was created, the words written by each of the friends in the factory, showed the true spirit of those individuals. What a great read!

The losely woven and intricate cloth of globalization

A month or so ago, I received a call from an excited colleague who was wondering if I'd be willing to review a book for her. It seems her friend had just successfully published a book and was to begin publicizing it in a round of events. My reply was, "Sure, have the publisher send me a copy." A couple of weeks later, a review copy of Fugitive Denim arrived and I thought, "What have I done? This may be tough to get through." Well, instead I had a tough time putting it down. Far from a dry treatise on globalization, I found myself immersed in the lives of several characters and wanting to know more about them and how they were "getting along." Ms. Snyder, in discussing her book with friends took to joking that it was "about the people in your pants." Indeed! This intriguing story about the people who make our clothes educated me on some of the intricacies of globalization in general and the garment industry in particular. The peoples' stories are compelling; from Mehman Husseinov who loves cotton, to Rogan who designs denim garments with soul and style to Alison and Bono (Paul) Hewson who want to support workers worldwide and Scott, the auditor who said, "The only boundaries that exist, exist in your own mind."

Snyder is an award winning (Overseas Press Award) investigative journalist. She has written for the New York Times Magazine, Slate, Glamour, Jane, Salon and the New Republic. Her considerable skills are on display in this book. She writes in a clear, concise manner with ample footnote and endnote support. Yet she has managed to weave story that wends its way from Cambodia to Azerbaijan to New York and points in between. Her ability to use an incredible amount of detail to build her characters successfully propels the story forward. Snyder has managed to put a wonderfully human face on a very complex issue of pitting our ecosystem against the undeniable forces of globalization and consumerism. From factories to responsible buyers, the story jets from country to country, from person to person and from celebrity to unsung hero.

True to her profession, Snyder avoids preaching or forcing conclusions. Rather she puts facts in front of the reader, with the references for validation, and magically mixes the facts with an incredibly creative wit. Fugitive Denim makes the reader laugh, wonder, and shake her or his head at the sheer complexity of the treaties, quotas and labeling systems we have created.

Fugitive Denim is an intelligent, compelling and well documented story that is a cut above other books on the pervasive effects of globalization in our lives. This is a must read for any government official or business executive involved in international sourcing or commerce - and who isn't these days?

Jeans and the People who Have Touched Yours

Here's a fascinating book about the economic, agricultural, environmental, political and socioeconomic effect of purchasing a pair of jeans. Everywhere you go people are wearing jeans. Everyone I know owns at least one pair. Around the world thousands of people are wishing you would buy a pair of jeans. In fact their livelihood depends on it. The global denim industry is a $55-billion-a-year business.
This book by an international journalist, is an amazing journey from the cotton fields of Azerbaijan to sweat shops in Cambodia, to the politics of Capitol Hill, to an award winning designer whose goal is to save the planet. I now look more closely at the jeans people are wearing and my opinion about buying another pair of jeans has been challenged.

Rachel is a brilliant, funny writer who researched her topic with amazing detail. Despite language and cultural barriers, she was able to get into the hearts and minds of the people who make a living off the making and selling of blue jeans. The garment industry, which employs as many as 40 million people, is an often overlooked industry, and thousands of employees are in jeopardy when bad weather destroys a field of cotton, international tax laws get appealed or a NY designer changes the cut of a pant leg. This book truly is about the people in your pants and the work they do so we can look and feel good in our favorite pair of jeans.

Man oh man, this is a really interesting important and globe-trotted work. I highly recommend following Rachel Louis Snyder's "thread" between countries, working people, cultural icons and raw material. In the process you will learn about some facinating trade laws/practices, labor trends and most importantly your possible impact as a consumer. I found her narrative voice extremely engaging and felt like we coud easily share a conversation and cup of coffee! It is not easy to paint as far-reaching a picture as Ms. Snyder lends us. I can only thank her for the effort and urge readers to open to page one.

Money well-spent

There aren't many books that I read through and then turn right around and re-read, but this is one of them. Such a "wealth" of information on the subject of what to do when faced with a sudden wealth event. My second time through, I will be taking notes and making lists. I found the book to be very wise and comprehensive. The companion web-site has not launched yet at the time I am writing this, but promises to be full of resources such as recommendations for advisors and tools to gain a better understanding of oneself and money habits through self tests. I believe in being true to myself, but to do that, I must first know myself. I found this book really opened my eyes to some truths about myself and has made me more aware of my strengths and weaknesses. in summary,buying this book was money well-spent!

I read over 100 business/finance/self-help books per year and I must say, this book is one of the best books that I have read in a long, long time.

Not only does it offer tons of practical advice for sudden wealth recipients, it also dives deeply into the often overlooked psychological forces which influence the recipients of sudden wealth and their families/friends. The author has a way of distilling complex ideas into actionable and easy-to-implement steps, which makes this book far more powerful than most other books on wealth.

I that would highly recommend this book for anyone who wants practical advice on all aspects of how to protect, grow and manage wealth.
