About the Author
Dr. Guangyu Wu, the editor of this book, is a professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Medical College of Georgia, Georgia Regents University. The long term goal of Dr. Wu’s research effort is to define the molecular mechanisms underlying the intracellular trafficking and signal propagation of GPCRs. Dr. Wu’s research at the earlier stages, as a graduate student and a post-doctoral fellow, was mainly on the GPCR pharmacology and signal transduction pathways. Since starting his own laboratory in the Department of Pharmacology at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center New Orleans, Dr. Wu has focused his research on the regulation of GPCR export from the endoplasmic reticulum through the Golgi apparatus to the cell surface through studying the function of well-defined transport machinery at different intracellular organelles and defining specific motifs embedded within the receptors that direct receptor export from the ER/Golgi or cell surface transport.

Lentin Joseph

Lentin Joseph is an author, entrepreneur, electronics engineer, robotics enthusiast, machine vision expert, embedded programmer, and the founder and CEO of Qbotics Labs (http://www.qboticslabs.com) from India. He completed his bachelor's degree in electronics and communication engineering at the Federal Institute of Science and Technology (FISAT), Kerala. For his final year engineering project, he made a social robot that can interact with people. The project was a huge success and was mentioned in many forms of visual and print media. The main features of this robot were that it can communicate with people and reply intelligently and has some image processing capabilities such as face, motion, and color detection. The entire project was implemented using the Python programming language. His interest in robotics, image processing, and Python started with that project. After his graduation, for 3 years he worked in a start-up company focusing on robotics and image processing. In the meantime, he learned famous robotic software platforms such as Robot Operating System (ROS), V-REP, Actin (a robotic simulation tool), and image processing libraries such as OpenCV, OpenNI, and PCL. He also knows robot 3D designing and embedded programming on Arduino and Tiva Launchpad. After 3 years of work experience, he started a new company called Qbotics Labs, which mainly focuses on research to build up some great products in domains such as robotics and machine vision. He maintains a personal website (http://www.lentinjoseph.com) and a technology blog called technolabsz (http://www.technolabsz.com). He publishes his works on his tech blog. He was also a speaker at PyCon2013, India, on the topic Learning Robotics using Python. Roman Catholics have long had a reputation for their devotion to the woman known as the Blessed Virgin Mary, and Hahn, a convert to Catholicism, is uniquely qualified to both explain and justify the practice. A former Protestant minister who once condemned Marian piety as idolatrous, Hahn's theological writings (Rome Sweet Home; The Lamb's Supper) now illuminate his adopted faith for many a cradle Catholic. His treatment of the woman many consider the mother of God is accessible theology, written in the style of one who is skilled in making lofty ideas understandable and interesting. Using the Bible and scholarly sources, Hahn asserts that Mary was given by Christ to be the mother of all Christians, and that those who do not accept her as part of their family are woefully bereft. He goes on to trace the Church's high regard for Mary to the early days of Christianity, when, he writes, Mary was regarded as the "new Eve" and was identified with the "ark of the new covenant." Well-known Catholic theologian and author Hahn has contributed to the immense body of Marian literature with an accessible, almost conversational treatment of the place of Mary in Roman Catholic theology. Hahn's style is persuasively easy, but the theology he expounds and champions is at times complex, and he negotiates this difficult territory well. Hahn's book is an excellent American response to the current Pope's well-known devotion to the Virgin Mary and to the fact that her status in the official Church teachings has never been higher. Highly recommended where there is a strong Catholic readership.

This Baptist found deep scriptural insights about Mary

This book really hit me hard, and that came as big shock, especially for a Baptist like me. For one thing, I never thought that so much deep insight could come from such a relatively short and easy-to-read book. For another, I never realized before how the Catholic Church's teachings about Mary were actually deeply rooted in Scripture. That is because I have been reading the Bible like most other Protestants, simply looking for proof-texts to shore-up what I was already taught. But now that I have discovered how to read the Bible typologically, I do not plan on ever going back to that.
Does this mean becoming Catholic? I still don't know for sure. However, it sure means that I can no longer use Mary as my excuse for staying out. As a lifelong Baptist, it feels very strange even to write those words. "Hail, Holy Queen" was not at all what I expected. I was ready for another set of apologetics arguments for Mary, like the ones I had heard from other Catholic apologists. I still do not know how to describe it, but this book is so different, in approach and tone and insight. It spoke both to my head and my heart. It made Mary more than convincing, it made the truth of her divine motherhood compelling. Not just true but beautiful. Do not misunderstand what I am saying. This is not mystical babble or emotionalism. It is deep scriptural wisdom. It is also not Scott Hahn's clever way with words, it is the ancient teaching and living tradition of Catholicism.
I still have a long way to go. Lots of other questions about purgatory and relics and the Mass. I have a funny feeling though that those teachings are probably as biblical as Mary. It is exciting and scary. Pray for me, and for my bewildered wife.

Good luck remaining protestant

Scott Hahn does it again. After reading his The Lamb's Supper, I had a much better knowledge about the Eucharist and the Mass. While I felt comfortable talking about them, as I was well aware of the scripture that backs them up, I never knew how I could defend my reverence for Mary. Until now.

I immediately felt at home when he began discussing Revelation, as it was the focus of The Lamb's Supper, which is still fresh in my mind. He first pulls you in by referring to the male child in Revelation 12 as Jesus, quoting the child who "will rule all the nations." Protestants (should) agree that this is obviously Jesus. But who is the woman crying out in pain as she's about to give birth? Catholics would argue that it is Mary, but doesn't the Catholic Church teach that Mary had no labor pains because she was protected from the effects of Original Sin? Hahn has an answer for this. But what of the crown she wears with twelve stars? Do they not represent the tribes of Israel? Hahn argues that they can, but that doesn't mean it's all they represent. These questions and more are addressed in this book, and you may well finish the book with a new take on Revelation as well.

This book is a must have for all Christians simply for the connection he makes to the old testament kinghood. The queen was not the king's wife, as he would actually have several, so the decision was made that the queen would be the king's mother. So if Jesus is our king, our queen is... you guessed it, Mary. A point Hahn makes prior to giving us this clue is how, though Jesus seems to rebuke His mother at the wedding feast at Cana, He performs His first miracle there because why? His mother, the queen, asked (and Scott explains that Jesus calling Mary "woman" wasn't any sort of insult by referring back to Adam and Eve). If we just look at king Solomon, Hahn reminds us that while the king was superior to the queen, he still did as she asked because she was his mother. Not only this, but she would often be asked by those wanting the king's help to intercede for them, knowing he would not refuse.

Protestants beware. If Scott can give a Catholic a brand new view on Marian dogma, I wouldn't count on you finishing this book without making some major changes.

Extremely useful and well-written introduction to the topic of war in medieval Europe

I first read the author's later work, _The Ancient Warrior,_ and was very impressed by his knowledge, his astute interpretations, and the accessibility of his prose and presentation. This book is equally informative, especially since the early medieval period is one of my principal interests. Dougherty is a freelance historian, not an academic, but he knows his subject very well. His specialty is in weapons technology and tactics and he understands both fields comprehensively.

In the post-Roman world, warfare ceased to be a function of the state and reverted to its earlier tribal bases, with the continually warmongering feudal aristocracy being the evolution of that. Warfare between neighboring lords, or (less often) nations, broke down into four main areas by type of participant: Mounted fighters, foot soldiers, missile troops, and "specialists," which included engineers, sappers, and artillerymen in the later period.

Mounted forces consisted mostly of knights, the highest-status segment of society, if only because horses and armor were very expensive and required constant training. Lighter mounted troops, including horse archers, were common farther east and in the Muslim lands, but Dougherty focuses mostly on Western Europe. Foot troops ran from "sergeants" and housecarls and other full-time professional men-at-arms at the top to levies made up of poorly-armed, untrained peasants at the bottom, whose function was to be arrow-fodder and keep the enemy busy while their social superiors got close enough to fight. Missiles meant longbowmen in some areas and crossbowmen in others, with small but still powerful recurved bows in use farther east. This was a more advanced technology and therefore anathema to most knights, who generally considered shooting at your betters from a distance to be unsporting. Siegecraft was highly specialized and attracted freelance professionals, as did the later appearance of artillery.

As in his later book, every page is filled with color illustrations, explanatory drawings and diagrams, and battle maps. Key engagements are detailed as examples of good or bad tactics and the use and misuse of types of forces and weapons. And throughout, the language is plain and straightforward as Dougherty points out how the European style of war evolved and why. An excellent introductory volume.

Comprehensive Yet Easy to Read

This an excellent book for learning about medieval warfare. Colour maps
of famous battles are plentiful as well as detailed line drawings of military
clothing, armour and weapons. There are chapters on knights, foot soldiers
and 'missle troops' (mostly archers).

The captions usually indicate when the image was made; nineteenth
centuries engravings and paintings are not that accurate. Even
contemporary images reflect who commissioned them, the
kings and nobles who are most prominent in medieval manuscripts.

The text shows that the book was written from a depth of knowledge.
The vital role of the peasant levies is described. Most histories
emphasise the role of the knights and archers 'while a mob of miserable
peasant infantry cower nearby'. Military camps, the effects of on
agriculture and the purpose of tournaments are also covered.

A whole chapter is devoted to siege warfare and the improvements
to castle defences. Battles are only the first step of an occupation; it was more important to
capture towns and castles.

An essential book for those writing or reading historical novels as well
as high school or first year university students of history.

A Great Summary

I'm not an expert in the field of military history, let alone medieval military history, so I can't vouch for the accuracy of this book, but as a layman I'm quite impressed with it. A survey of the weapons, technology and fighting techniques during the period 1000 to 1500 C.E., this volume has excellent text and even more excellent graphics that describe and explain such topics as how moats were bridged, the role of a portcullis, and fighting techniques with long sword and shield. To my mind, this volume is far better than most Osprey volumes that you'll run into. It's really an introduction to how fighting was conducted rather than a history of events, though it does use a handful of medieval battles to illustrate the points being made. Highly recommended, especially as an introduction to the subject.

This scene sets the mood for an eerie and gripping time fantasy by a talented writer. Zoe tells her story, beginning when she is five and comes to live with her devoted, nurturing grandparents. She immediately discovers that their 19th-century house is haunted by Zoe Louise, a beautiful child dressed in old-fashioned clothes, eagerly anticipating her eleventh birthday party. Zoe Louise becomes Zoe's beloved playmate, invisible to grownups. Stonewords shares many devices with Philippa Pearce's Tom's Midnight Garden (Lippincott, 1984); comparison of the two books could stimulate a fascinating literary discussion. Conrad's Eden of backyard and playhouse becomes sinister when Zoe's mother appears and takes Zoe into the woods, where a bank of roses marks the border of an earlier garden. The roses were planted 100 years ago, Zoe's mother says, by a mother whose daughter Zoe died on her eleventh birthday and now lies buried in the cemetery. Then Zoe Louise turns spectral, decaying before her playmate's eyes, and the modern Zoe is impelled into the past, where she finds herself locked in a struggle with fate, her best friend's life at stake. Conrad's oblique evocation of horror is as intense as her portrayal of madness in Prairie Songs (Harper, 1985). Pam Conrad wrote many award-winning books for children, including the immensely popular The Tub People and The Tub Grandfather, both illustrated by Richard Egielski. She is also the author of a number of critically acclaimed novels, including Prairie Songs, a 1986 ALA Best Children's Book of the Year and a 1985 ALA Golden Kite Honor Book, and Stonewords, winner of the 1991 Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Juvenile Mystery.

Great book... disapointing condition.

While this is the correct book I ordered, It's nothing close to what I expected. There is no dust jacket. There's marker and tape all over the inside and outside of the book and the pages got wet at the top at one point and poorly dried. This was my favorite book as a child and was supposed to be a Christmas gift for my daughter. I'm beyond disappointed in the condition.
The book, as I said, is to this day one of my absolute favorite childhood books. I read it when I was 11 and I'm giving it to my daughter who is 11.

creepy!

So I read this in the 5th or 6th grade, and remember it's pleasing red hardback cover (I never kept the dust jackets), it's enticing cream pages, deceptive slimness. It creeped me out, this child- ghost story. I remembered the scene where Zoe Louise stood in the middle of the dinner table, kicking the roast in front of oblivious adults. And the love/repulsion Zoe felt for Zoe Louise, which I also felt. I adored it so much I thought about naming my little girl Zoe Louise. Unfortunately I lent it to someone and never got it back. Well thank you Amazon for restoring my childhood treasure, same red cover and all. As for the book itself; reading all these years later I felt the same delicious creepy horror. I feel like the plot and characters are well developed for such a quick read and would recommend it for a read-out-loud while camping with the kiddos or for a quick fun read.

I read this book in the fifth grade and was never able to find it. Thank goodness for Amazon these days. I'm not really a reader but this book has stuck with me through the years. I just re-read it and absolutely flew through it. What a fabulous read! Highly reccomended!
