Buyer beware - there is only one session!

The dvd sessions are not as advertised. I purchased the dvd and discussion guide to use for a small group Bible study. We have some barely-literate adults in the study, so I prefer to use dvd's rather than books. I purchases this dvd expecting to find six sessions of Keller's simple teaching relating to The Prodigal God. Unfortunately, the dvd actually contains only one session of 38 minutes. The following five "sessions" were each 1-2 minute clips from the original 38 minute session! The dvd simply does not contain the six sessions as advertised on this website and the cover of the dvd.

Further, the discussion guide assumes with each session that the participants are reading Keller's book "The Prodigal God." The first discussion question for each session asks, "What did you learn by reading chapter [x] this week?" The questions are thus more connected to the book than the dvd. There is, therefore, no way to use this dvd and discussion guide without each person in the group purchasing and reading the book, and if each person purchases and reads the book, then the dvd has very little to add. This means that for our Bible study group, we had to decide between either buying and reading the books, or discarding the study altogether.

In general, I have a high regard for Keller's teachings and writings. Unfortunately, this dvd and discussion guide seem to be a publisher's shady ploy to maximize the profitability of his Prodigal God book.

Excellent 35 minute talk presented by Keller

Excellent 35 minute talk presented by Keller. It opens aspects of the story I have never been aware of. There are six sessions of discussion material, each started with a 2 minute segment of the talk. For my money, the 2 minute segments are nowhere near enough. By the second week people have forgotten what was said in the first week's talk. Sometimes you have people coming in who didn't hear the original talk. You might say, "why can't they just read the book?" but then you have to ask, "is it DVD based discussion or book based?" I ended up going back and editing salient points from the dvd that related to the week's topic, giving me a ten to fifteen minute opening talk each week. Either the producers should have done this, or Keller should have done a short talk for each session, marshalling the relevant material for that week. It has taken hours to cut it up, so I'm slightly disappointed. However it's an excellent video (despite the constant background music), excellent book, and, of course, revolutionary subject matter.

The above I have written as the review for the first two volumes of the Activity. I'm obliged to add to that though. I an enthralled by this series: the attention to detail, the character development, and appropriate use of weapons and tactics paint such a vivid picture for the reader/viewer. Incredible artwork and writing with a wonderful story arc make this series more than "palatable"...i feel like a crackhead waiting for the next hit...bring on volume 4!

I've read all three books in the series and have grown to like the series more each time. I typically read a lot of non-fiction books, and these have been a nice change in between other books. They are a fast read. The artwork is great. Within each individual volume, the story line is not very deep, but spanning across the series there are different story lines which carry from one to the next. I wish they came out more frequently.

Fun dragon-y fantasy/sci-fi with lots of heart.

I didn't go into Draconia: Forging Trust with overly high expectations; I'm not much of a fantasy guy, and dragons never really interested me. I ended up being very pleasantly surprised.

A writer that wears his or her influences on their sleeve can sometimes come across as amateurish, but there is something endearing about the way F.J. Hansen writes in this book. There are a lot of times I feel like the prose could have been better, but any grammatical or general writing mishaps in the novel are made up for by tons of heart. Hansen writes with warmth, and love for his subject matter, and that really comes through in the book. It is refreshing to read something by someone who is doing the writing purely out of affection for what he's writing about. It's not trying to be high art, and it really isn't, but it is a lot of fun.

The story of Draconia: Forging Trust is essentially that the military of Earth is traveling through space looking for a new human colony when they stumble upon Draconia, a planet inhabited by sentient creatures resembling dragons of folklore. The novel is basically the story of their developing friendship, in spite of people on both sides doing all they can to stop the alliance. Hansen clearly has a bit of a problem with militarism, and writes a story about getting past differences and making friends. It could be argued that it is a little naive, but I found it refreshing.

It reads like a young adult's novel and really should be marketed as such. I think there a lot of kids out there who would love this book. It could use an edit job, as there are a few scenes that seemed to be there only for the purpose of rehashing what we have already learned, but it's really solid. There are some fun characters, and a great story of friendship in the relationship between human Ensign Audwin McClance and draconian Varthikes. I would recommend this story to anyone who likes fantasy and dragons; I would especially recommend this to younger readers. It is written with love, and that's really what makes it what it is. I'm looking forward to the sequel.

About the Author
M. Robert Mulholland Jr. (1936-2015) was emeritus professor of New Testament at Asbury Theological Seminary and the author of several books, including Shaped by the Word, The Deeper Journey, Revelation and the landmark spiritual formation book Invitation to a Journey. He also served as pastor of Shirley Community Church in Shirley Mills, Maine. During his extensive academic career, Mulholland served as adjunct professor at the Academy for Spiritual Formation and taught at several seminaries and universities around the world, including Wesley Theological Seminary, Harvard University, McMurry University, Moscow Evangelical Christian Seminary (Moscow, Russia), West Africa Theological Seminary (Lagos, Nigeria) and Baltic Mission Center Theological Seminary (Tallinn, Estonia). An elder in the Kentucky Conference of the United Methodist Church, Mulholland was a frequent speaker at Bible and spiritual renewal conferences. He and his wife, Lynn, have two children.

About the Author

Christopher Shields studied English Literature and Classics at Bowling Green State University, in Ohio, before taking an M.A. and Ph. D. in Philosophy from Cornell University. He has been Professor of Philosophy and Classics at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Professor of Classical Philosophy at the University of Oxford, and is currently Shuster Professor of Philosophy and Concurrent Professor of Classics at the University of Notre Dame. He has held visiting positions at Cornell, Yale, Stanford, The Humboldt University, Berlin, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

The worst book ever!

This is with no doubt the absolute worst book I've ever read in my life for it is just filled with uncertainties and so many ridiculous points of views that you just end up being lost. The book instead of giving you answers for somewhat reasonable questions it just makes you wonder more. I think its very stupid the fact that Aristotle mixed psychological implications with the soul's qualities. It just seems to me that for Aristotle the soul is like the mind which is complete nonsense. Just don't buy it. The book is also incomprehensible since the author is constantly explaining complex matters with very unusual words which makes you feel extremely confused.

Compiled with explanatory text by a graduate from the Moody Bible Institute with scholarship in pastoral studies, Jesus: The Authorized Biography turns directly to the gospels to portray the life, words, teachings, experiences, and death of Jesus Christ. Sections offer simplification, clarification, and context for the Biblical text in contemporary language, but Jesus: The Authorized Biography earns its seemingly audacious subtitle by faithfully reproducing the New Testament texts (in English translation, of course - different translations of the Bible have been fused together to create a smoother holistic narrative) that speak directly of Jesus' life. The words of Jesus and God in particular are emphasized in bold print. A highly readable narrative, as accessible to lay readers as to Christians and theologians, that gives readers of all faiths a better understanding of who Jesus was and what he strived for.
