How to win customers on the Internet

Advertising is not dead, but content marketing is the driver that leading companies now use to capture the hearts and minds of their customers, according to Joe Pulizzi in this book. We need to be epic with our content marketing, focusing more on our customers and less on our products; to sell more, we need to be marketing our products less.

So what is this thing that the author calls "epic content marketing"? There are six principles:

* Your content must fill an unmet need or answer a question for your customer
* You must deliver your content consistently
* Your content needs to be written in your voice, preferably with some humour
* You need to express an opinion rather than giving a balanced history report
* You must avoid sales speak, as it destroys the value of your content
* You must aim to produce the very best content relating to your content niche

The book goes on to describe how to identify and define your content niche and content marketing mission statement, how to create an editorial calendar and manage the content creation process, different content types and content assets, how to use social media in marketing your stories, other content promotion techniques, and how to measure the impact of your content marketing initiatives.

The author writes in a clear and compelling style, and his advice seems to be very useful to anyone engaged in business but particularly to those with a marketing role. It seems to me that the more that businesses get on the content marketing bandwagon, the harder it will be for anyone to get found amongst all of the content, so there is a big advantage to getting into content marketing as soon as possible.

Hands Down the Best Content Marketing Book Available Now - Phenomenal Read

Content marketing is an evolving discipline. It has risen, very quickly, to become the most important tool in the digital marketing tool chest. Joe Pulizzi's new book, Epic Content Marketing, is quite simply, the very best book right now about the topic. I'm a content marketing guy myself, having written a couple of books on the subject and running a content development firm, so I know what's good and what's not. There are so many phenomenal takeaways in this book, I'm not sure where to begin. But before I do that, let me share with you why this is a "must have" book for your company:

* It covers content marketing from every angle and for every type of company, so it is comprehensive
* It brings up innovative ideas and strategies that no other book on the subject covers, so its groundbreaking
* The book is absolutely a page-turner, it flows so effortlessly. I finished the book, front to back on a 5-hour plane flight, and I never do that...with any book. That's how good this book is. So, it's easy to read.
* His enthusiasm for content marketing and passion for business "leap" off the page, you can't help but get caught up in Joe's positive energy. So, it's motivational.
* It is written by the "torchbearer" of the industry and one who I continually learn from...Joe Pulizzi, the guy who puts on the best content marketing event of the year, Content Marketing World. So, it's the absolute authority book.

And here are the specific things that I really enjoyed:

* The Foreword by Michael Brenner, VP of Marketing and Content Strategy at SAP. He explained how even a big, well respected company has learned and implemented the finer points of content marketing
* I like how he told his own story about Content Marketing Institute and how they use great content to power their own efforts
* And along those lines, Joe makes the book a personal story, by sharing parts of his private life to illustrate key points as well. He described how his own family uses a mission statement, which he has used to teach his children, and...how much it's made a difference. I like when authors share personal stories, it makes the reading experience more enjoyable.
* He makes a very key point to kick off the book..."your customers don't care about you, your products or your services. They care about themselves"...this is a mistake that so many companies are still making. This is a critically important distinction between companies that are winning and losing the content marketing game.
* Key insights into journalists and how they are changing the content marketing paradigm (ie. Joe mentions that "Journalists are no longer wary of working for non-media companies.")
* He explains a key change that most people have not thought about: the diminishing importance of traditional media outlets. He says "they simply do not have the resources that non-media companies have to compete over the long term". Translation: This means the door is wide open for any company to become the media in their industry.
* The case studies are inspiring: I loved the Legos story, Tesla, Coca-Cola's Content 2020 project, Red Bull and many more
* I loved his "Seven Ways to Take the Media World by Storm" on page 37...this is basically the blue print for your company to become a content marketing powerhouse. The "rent-to-own" strategy was a key learning point for me.
* The emphasis on "Story telling" and how it differs from being simply "content aware" or a "thought leader".
* The idea of focusing on subscription as a key content marketing goal. Very few companies do this now.
* Using Pippity for pop-over services - I'm checking them out this week!
* The idea of setting up "listening posts" to get real time feedback from customers (this is brilliant)
* Great section on Editorial Calendars and their importance to your content marketing success
* I LOVE how he spells out the harsh reality: that most SEO firms and traditional advertising firms don't get content marketing. Reader beware.

So, I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea: This is one of the best business books of the year, period. For all the above reasons and more, you absolutely NEED to get this book. It's quite simply an incredible read for any company, large or small, in any industry. Pick up a copy of Epic Content Marketing...today! You'll love it.

Be Epic - It's not hard with this book

In his closing address at Content Marketing World 2013, Joe Pulizzi advised more than 1700 content marketers in attendance to "Try". Like so many elements of content marketing, it's a simple concept to understand but difficult to implement. In his new book, Epic Content Marketing: How to Tell a Different Story, Break through the Clutter, and Win More Customers by Marketing Less, Pulizzi manages to demystify both the art and science of the burgeoning content revolution and give marketers confidence and inspiration. Importantly, he also challenges the reader to get uncomfortable and assume a few risks.

The book is organized into five distinct sections starting with the history of content marketing and moving through strategy, process, implementation and measurement. Suitable for both the seasoned professional and marketing intern, Pulizzi's advice and examples guide the reader through the essentials of a successful content marketing program. Each chapter is summarized with an "Epic Thoughts" section, a helpful recap of the key points of the chapter, along with a comprehensive list of "Epic Resources". Pulizzi also provides online links to additional content and tools throughout the book demonstrating his commitment to being helpful, a principle he endorses as an essential trait of effective content. It is not too small, It is not too tall

Not everyone is the same and when three friends play hide and go seek, it is apparent that not everyone can find a tree to hide in.

Lulu and Charlie help Oliver, a baby elephant, to search out a tree that is just right for him.

Sounding very much like a Goldilocks tale the three set off to find something that is just right for Oliver.

When Oliver’s feelings are hurt and he stomps off, his two best friends search out the perfect solution to their problem.

This simply story teaches ingenuity and friendship. Just the thing for your young problem solvers when their friends need them most.

I preordered this months before it was even released because I discovered the artist on Etsy and fell in love. Then I spent weeks on Amazon trying to find stuffed animals to match the three animals in the book. Of course on Amazon I was successful. Now have three great stuffed animals that look almost idential to the animals in her book. The book is absolutely adorable and we can't wait for her to come out with another.

4.5 Excellent book but missing a few key elements

I'd give this book a 4.5. It is an excellent read, extremely thorough, and I learned things I didn't know despite teaching Italian Renaissance many times. To the degree I have any problem with the book, it deals with lack of attention to two main facets of the Renaissance -- 1) art and 2) women, gender and sexuality issues. There is a chapter on art, but almost nothing on the huge field of artistic patronage and its importance as a facet of familial vanity/honor/competition and conspicuous consumption. Bartlett doesn't deal at all (except for a few sentences) with women, gender and sexuality, despite Joan Kelly's opening of that field long ago with her article "Was there a Renaissance for women?" Even though her answer was no, not for Italy, not then, it led to numerous works on female writers and artists of the Renaissance as well as lives of wives, widows, prostitutes and courtesans. Likewise, many books have dealt extensively with sexuality in the Renaissance. I have added these subjects separately to my syllabus with other readings.

I think this is an excellent book, but those are areas that need attention. Less attention could be paid to the minor states of the peninsula.

Great overview in an attention-holding narrative!

Perhaps a scholar of Italian Renaissance may find this book too elementary, the remaining 99% of us will be entertained and informed. The author presents a history of this place and time with an eye to the interplay of various forces that together create a fascinating and thoughtful epic tale. The author manages to adroitly incorporate these disparate but essential threads into a tapestry that makes sense both along the way and most, most gratifying, in the end. When I closed the back cover, I felt gratifyingly familiar with the art, the politics, the economics and the culture of Renaissance Italy (and in relevant part contemporary Europe), not to mention the key figures and events made fascinatingly memorable in the author's telling.

Exellent Stephen KIng Read

Excellent book filled with several short stories by the master horror writer Stephen King. The book was required reading for an online college class called: "Horror Writing Intensive: Analyzing the Work of Genre Master Stephen King." BTW it was an excellent class taught by Philip Athans another fine author and teacher. For the class we were required to read and analyze several books by Stephen King. I find he has a gift of really bringing the reader into the story, which a great writer is supposed to do. The various short stories in this book are all very well written. You will not be sorry if you by this book it is well worth the read. I’ve already recommended this book to my family and friends. I just hope my Sci-Fi book, "Deep Light”, which will be published before December 2017, will be as well received.

I have loved this book for years

I have loved this book for years! I bought it as a hardback when it came out originally and decided I also needed it for my kindle. Stephen King is an amazing story teller, and the ones in this book are exceptional! My favorites are Mrs Todds Shortcut and The Jaunt. The Mist is also in here, and also one of my favorites. I recommend this book for anyone who likes to get creeped out like me!

One of my favorites of King's short story collections

I've been reading Stephen King's stories since I was a young teen back in the 80s and have always had a soft spot for his earlier works. These last couple of months, I have been revisiting his older works, both the full-length novels and short story collections. "Skeleton Crew" is one of my perennial favorites of his short story collections, a perfect blend of the macabre and the twisted.

Could have truly salvific consequences

Subtitled "Twenty-One Authors Discuss the Gay Near-Death Experience as Spiritual Transformation," this book concerns an absolutely fascinating and compelling phenomenon. What a great idea! Obviously gay people die too. We must have interrupted experiences of dying just like the people who are written about in books like Life After Life or depicted in movies like Resurrection. And with so many people hospitalized with life-threatening conditions resulting from AIDS, maybe we have even more such NDEs in our population.
Liz Dale, a research psychologist in San Francisco, set out to investigate this topic after hearing a speaker at the 1996 convention of the International Association for Near-Death Studies mention that there was no research on this phenomenon in the gay community. Over a couple of years, she gathered a group of about thirty gay men and lesbians. It was a liberating experience, she reports, for them being able to talk about their NDEs without fear of dismissal, ridicule, or bafflement. She has collected twenty-one of the stories for publication.
In some ways, the research did not result in the findings Dale was probably expecting. That is, most of the accounts end with the subjects' answer to a couple of questions about how their sexual orientation affected their NDE and how their NDE might have affected their attitudes toward their sexual orientation. Since the subtitle suggests the gay Near-Death Experience is a spiritual transformation, one would expect the subjects to report positive changes in these attitudes. But, in fact, almost every account ends with the subject saying their sexual orientation had NO effect and their attitudes toward it were unaffected.
Nonetheless, the accounts themselves are wonderful, moving, and even inspiring. What they seem to describe isn't so much about death, but about the mystical component of the subjects' lives. While most of the accounts are of true NDEs, that is, experiences of leaving the body following a medical emergency, like an automobile accident, several are of more generalized mystical phenomena and several are of drug-induced states (often suicidal overdoses).
The book is less important for arriving at scientific findings than for offering examples of how to think about and prepare for dying.
The NDE phenomenon seems to demonstrate that "afterlife" happens in the process of dying. The brain's shut-down procedures can be experienced as timeless and eternal and infinitely meaningful and blissful. It really doesn't matter what happens next. We can never know since truly no one comes back from having fully died. (Interestingly, even Jesus whose great saving act was dying and rising again never reported what was on the "other side." Did the Apostles just forget to ask? Maybe there is no intelligible answer.)
But if dying can provide a mystical experience of entering into bliss and reunion with all the love in one's life, then it'd be a good-and necessary-thing to prepare for it by creating some self-fulfilling prophecies for how you're going to react when you realize the time has come and you're about to die.
That's the beauty and importance of this book. It offers templates. It promises to get you thinking. It might inspire you to plan your dying.
I'd have liked this book to report that the gay people who had NDEs all said there were gay pride banners adorning the tunnel of light and that the glimpse into heaven relieved them all of any fears or misgivings about their sexuality. Well, it didn't. But it certainly got me obsessed for days about how I want to die when the time comes and inspired my meditations with positive expectations. Clearly, one of the functions of meditation should be to routinely remind ourselves of our mortality and to prepare for how we'll react when mortality is realized.
"You do not know the time nor the hour," said Jesus. "Be prepared." Liz Dale's research could have truly salvific consequences in your life-and death.

Do All [Homosexuals] Go to Hell?

This book examines what happens to homosexuals and lesbians after they die. This is the first (and, as of 2001, the only) book to examine the Near-Death Experiences of [homosexuals]. Other than the preface, the stories are told by the experiencers themselves. Contrary to what some fundamentalist Christians would have you believe, God and angels are not against homosexuality. One homosexual who died and was later revived asked some angels, "It it OK to be [a homosexual]?". They laughed, and said, "Who do you think created [homosexuals]?", meaning God. One [homosexual] was told by his friend who died of AIDS when he met him in heaven, "I should openly celebrate and honor my sexuality as a gift from God. This was a startling revelation to me, especially after a lifetime of secrecy, fear, and guilt." This groundbreaking research shows that [homosexuals]' ultimate fate is no different from most straight NDEs.
I didn't give it 5 stars, since the Discussion chapter was missing, although listed in the table of contents, and there were a number of misprints, especially in the appendices. Still, it is a must for those interested in NDEs or homosexuality.

Wonderful Book!! Facsinating read!!

I was engrossed in this personal account compilation of Near Death Experiences through the eyes of Gay men and women. It brought one obvious truth to the surface for me, that we all basically have near identical experiences in the afterlife, and there is no difference between being gay or being straight in the scheme of things. That is a truth Ive long suspected, and now I am searching for more on the subject...Liz Dale shoudl compile another book, and next time, add to it with her thoughts and act as narrator for a discussion of the stories, maybe after each one even. It would give the reader more insight from a outside perspective instead of leaving all the work to the reader. Other than that, bravo!

and those writing reviews for what I am sure is book they never read, and who quote the bible and blah blah blah...you obviously do not get it, so why are wasting your energy trying to prove your moot point? Jesus may love you, but I think he also knows you are tragic mess.

I did not think that I could love William Bailey any more then I already do but after Stolen Wishes I am head over heels, and crazy in love, when it comes to William Bailey. The way that William puts Cally on a pedestal is breathtaking. He falls hard and fast for her, and looks at her like she hung the moon and the stars in the sky. Cally is smitten with William and admires him from afar. She is overjoyed and overwhelmed when he actually pursues her. He is her knight in shining armour. Stolen Wishes is only the beginning of one of the most heart-wrenching and sinfully sexy love stories I have ever read. This novella should make you run out and buy Wish I May. If you already own Wish I May, after reading Stolen Wishes, William Bailey will own a piece of your heart.

I was fortunate enough to have been given an early copy of this and since I absolutely adore Lexi Ryan and *cough*William*cough* I pounced on this book like a starved woman and oh. My. God. My heart, my poor little heart. You know that moment when you're riding a rollercoaster and you're at that point when the ride is just ascending and you don't know when it'll make that drop? Well, that's exactly what it felt like while I was reading Stolen Wishes, it's true that I did read Wish I May before Stolen Wishes but that didn't stop me from enjoying this book, it actually made the experience more... exhilarating. There was a sense of foreboding, which was the "drop", but I didn't necessarily know when it was going to happen and that made me really anxious. It's literally you knowing what's going to happen before the characters do and you want to warn them sooo bad but you can't and all you can do is watch and feel with them. (I suggest you read this one before Wish I May if you don't want to develop masochistic tendencies. I'm being serious.)

I don't know how but Lexi Ryan made me actually love William more in this book. (I don't even have an residual feelings left for Asher anymore... Sorry, babe.) William is such an inherently good person but not too good, if you catch my drift. *waggles eyebrows* But in all seriousness, if you loved William in Wish I May, you'll find that your feelings for him will have grown stronger in this book. It's not because he's a sweet and swoony guy, it's because you'll catch glimpses of the man he'll turn into the future and trust me, you won't be disappointed. I love that William is such a simple guy, all the money that's thrown his way makes him uncomfortable and you can just see how human that makes him, that his need to be loved and his vulnerability is what makes him so perfectly imperfect, you know? I just love him, okay, ughhhhhh, I LOVE HIM. *runs away*

Stolen Wishes sheds some light as to how people really treated Cally and her family, and that made this book hurt all the more. Like Cally, I was in denial as to what was really happening with her mom but like all fantasies, they end so Cally (and I) had to face the reality of what her mother did and was going to do and I ugly cried. Yup. It was obvious that the only light in Cally's life were her sisters, her best friends (they're awesome, btw) and William. Even though her life was, excuse me for being blunt, super crappy, she still managed to be slightly optimistic because of these people but then we know that all good things never come without a prize and they sure as hell don't last that long either. But hey, your only consolation is that there's a full length novel about William and Cally's life seven-years later so you should definitely read that ASAP after reading this one. (See, Lexi Ryan isn't completely evil. *winky face*)

I cannot express how much I completely love Lexi Ryan's New Hope series and I cannot wait to read more (I'm super excited for Hanna's story! Eeeeep!!) and I don't doubt that I'll be even more impressed with the next books because Lexi Ryan will never stop surprising me, in a good way! Stolen Wishes is exactly what a reader looks for in a novella, short but not to the point of being rushed or lacking, gives a brief but loaded introduction to the novel it is accompanying and it leaves you wanting more, so much more, and if I hadn't already read Wish I May, I would be stalking Lexi Ryan right now to give me a copy of that book but since I already read it, she's safe from my creepiness. Stolen Wishes is a beautiful but heartbreaking book that shows you that life isn't all that bad... it's worse. Kidding... Maybe.

Full of hope and heartbreak! Fall in love with Cally and Will!

Travel back to high school and see how it all began for William and Cally in Stolen Wishes, the prequel novella to Lexi Ryan’s Wish I May. I love the New Hope Series and fell in love hard for this couple while reading Wish I May. By the end of the book I was begging to know more about their history, about the events that transpired prior to this book. To say I was excited to get my hands on this novella is an understatement.

The only way I can describe this novella is pure satisfaction. Every loose end or question about the past that surfaced while reading Wish I May was neatly tied off and resolved in Stolen Wishes. If you haven’t read the series I would recommend reading this in between Unbreak Me and Wish I May. It’s the perfect introduction and transition from William/Maggie to William/Cally.

Despite being brief in length, Stolen Wishes overflows with emotion and content. The story is a combination of hope and heartbreak. The connection between William and Cally is undeniable and the foundation of their relationship is built. William is her mega swoon-worthy knight in shining armor. Both characters offer each other hope to find happiness outside of the confines of their family’s demands and reputation, but their potential is extinguished just as quickly as it ignited.

Stolen Wishes is the perfect addition to William and Cally’s story. It fulfills any lingering questions about their past and builds anticipation for the next installment in Lexi Ryan’s New Hope Series.
