Pieper’s concept of Tradition

Josef Pieper is one of may favourite writers. He is a very profound thinker and his works are very lucid, clear and suggesting. In this book Pieper reflects on an item which has been excluded from contemporary thinking, and his arguments show how the concept of tradition must be revisited and brought back to our culture, philosophy and thought. Tradition has to be seen as our own world, the world we live in, because the past , all the beliefs, ideas, convictions, world-views we are the heirs - even if we reject or reformulate some of those inheritances. I highly recommend this and others Pieper’s works. One of my favourites is “Leisure: The Basis of Culture

Excellent book for architecture students

Jim Leggit is an expert on drawing techniques that are fast and effective. In our modern age, everyone uses computer renderings, but a hybrid of hand drawing and computer modeling can make you stand out as a student or practicing professional. You don't have to be an "artist" to make beautiful drawings using Jim's techniques either. As a former architecture student, I have used these techniques to make award-winning presentations throughout school. I highly recommend this book for architecture students that want to make quick drawings while not staying put behind a computer the entire time.

Excellent quick reference on many different architectural rendering methods. I really like how traditional drawing techniques weren't avoided. Process for many different styles, quick overviews of the basics (like perspective, tools, layering, etc.) and many excellent supporting illustrations make this a great resource for those without formal training or still learning the trade.

Excellent book, wish I had it before starting Architecture school. Need more books like this that give specific "how to" info on to represent architecture ideas, since architecture professors are usually vague and open ended when teaching and helping. I speak from experience and I am attending one of the top B.Arch programs in the US.

Still an excellent treatment of the Principles behind programming languages.

Today I needed to recommend a book that would treat the ideas and concepts behind good programming. I remembered in college that I had taken a languages course, I looked on my bookshelf, and found this text. I started to re-read it, and found that the ideas and concepts that are covered in this book are still relevant and well treated for today's computing landscape. I only have the 2nd edition so it does not have a treatment of C or C++, but the ideas that it conveyes are still the most important aspect of learning about computer languages. A language you know does not help you with designing good code, however concepts of computer languages will help you no matter what language you code. Inside the cover flap reads a list of principles that are covered throughout the book in each section. Some of them are: Abstraction, Automation, Infomation hiding, Orthogonality, Portability, etc. I would recommend this book to anyone who wanted to learn how to *design* quality software from the ground up. This book will not teach you a language, this book will teach you how to design good code.

Although it's unlikely you'll ever use the programing languages discussed in this book, it's a good book to have as it teaches you the theory and motivation of programming languages in general.

I want my money back!

Being a lyricist (ck. home.earthlink.net/~paulkruger), I've been using Wood's Unabridged Rhyming Dictionary for so many years the book has begun to fall aprt. (Never realized till a few weeks ago, the edition I have was published in 1943.) It was time to replace it. Or so I thought.
Clement Wood's genius was to divide each section so that you could see at a glance words which have the same sound (e.g., approved, improved, reproved, etc.) and, therefore, were not true rhymes. So what does this appallingly dreadful edition do? They list all words alphabetically regardless of sound!
No wonder one of the editors is named Bogus.

Same old argument

Herbert Cole was convinced they needed a gun in the house for protection, but his wife, Alice, disagreed. It was the same old argument, and Herbert's position was, "Guns don’t kill people; people kill people.”

Refusing to discuss the subject, Herbert went to bed saying, "Tomorrow," as if indicating the conversation would happen the next day. The problem was that he NEVER wanted to discuss this so Alice wondered what the "conversation" would be like.

Unfortunately, someone broke into the house that night - before they ever got a chance to have that conversation the following day. Who would prove correct? Was it a good idea to have a gun in the house?

Do guns kill people or do people (with guns) kill people? Or are both Herbert and Alice completely off the mark with this argument?
