A Smoky Mountain Odyssey
By Linda Linguvic
The story is simple. A wounded confederate soldier decides he has had enough of war and slowly makes his way home, hoping the woman he loves, Ada, is waiting for him. The book chronicles this journey and reminds me a little of The Odyssey as well as Don Quixote.
Based on the author's first hand knowledge of the smoky mountains and his family legends, the book transports the reader to a Civil War scenario that has little resemblance to Gone With the Wind. Details of death and destruction are described in gruesome clarity and the long road home is rife with them. Inman, the lead character encounters cruelty and kindness, starvation and capture, rogues and victims. The author uses words well, and some of the images will haunt my mind for a long time.
The heroine, Ada, has been gently raised in Charleston and is not prepared for running a farm when her father dies and the hired help run off. She almost starves until another young woman of about her age, Ruby, moves in with her and teaches her how to survive. Ada's growth into competency and self-sufficiency is rendered with the same detailed descriptions as Inman's journey and I was left with a new appreciation of what farm life is all about.
The book is good and I understand why publishers were thrilled with it. It has a big theme, is well written, and gives its readers a fresh new way to look at the Civil War. Many of the scenes made me flinch, but it also deepened my understanding of this very important period in history and what it is to be an American.

Beautifully crafted, difficult, but above all amazing
By Alysson Oliveira
Charles Frazier's debut `Cold Mountain' received a deserved National Book Award in 1997. One of the best American novels of the 90s, this book is not for everyone. Part an unconventional love story, part a War story, but above all, the study of the human condition, the novel requires patience from the reader.
To experienced readers, who like literary works, it is not difficult to fall in love with this narrative. The story is slow, the writer builds his characters and situations bit by bit --that's why people who are looking for a war adventure or a conventional love story should stay away from `Cold Mountain'.
The focus on three main characters: Inman, a soldier who deserts the battle and embarks in a journey to meet Ada, his beloved who's trying to keep going the farm left by her father, and Ruby, a mountain-girl who helps her with the farm. Throught his journey, Inman meets a different cast of characters --some people help and some not-- that more than anything exemplify the human condition, mostly in war times. Meanwhile, Ada, who can't keep in touch with him, tries to survive in the farm her father left. She will count on the help from Ruby, a simple girl who knows a lot about nature and farming and wants to help Ada, as long as she is treated like an equal, and not a maid.
After the story is set, and the characters introduced, Frazier is free to left the three main characters dominating the narrative. Although they are not the narrators, we're allowed to see their most inner thoughts, fears and joys. Every character is believable, in my opinion. Everyone has his/her life changed because of the war, and all of them are wounded souls.
The narrative is very descriptive therefore many parts are static. And although the story seems not to be going anywhere, it actually it --but it is very subtle. For some readers, this kind of device is a problem --while for others this is truly beautiful. Not many writers have the ability that Frazier does to do such device. What in many narratives could be a bore, in his is simply wonderful to take a time off and look around, to see how much the environment has changed with the war.
Inman, Ada and Ruby are unforgettable. While he has one different supporting character every chapter; the two girls become close friends, in a beautiful friendship of mutual need. While Ruby can teach the mysteries of the nature; Ada helps her friends to learn things like arts.
All in all, Frazier has written one of the best novels published in the 90s. This is the kind of book that requires a lot from the reader, but it gives back much more. It is very rewarding to follow Inman, Ada and Ruby in their journey, however long and difficult it is.

The best 356 pages I've read in a long time!
By Gail
I bought Cold Mountain a couple of months ago and, thinking I wouldn't be able to put it down once I started it, have been saving it for a time when I'd be able to read without interruption. A four-day February beach trip provided the perfect opportunity.
This is a wonderful book! From the very first line - "At the first gesture of morning, flies began stirring.", I was hooked, and stayed with Inman, Ada, Monroe, the Swangers, Sara, Ruby, Stobrod, the Preacher, and the Goat Woman, right to the end. No, it's not a "pretty" story - war and what it does to people isn't pretty. Sure, I'd have preferred an ending that brought tears of joy, rather than tears of pain; but there really wasn't any other way for the book to end.
I'm neither an historian, nor a Civil War buff, but I loved this book! The word imagery made me "see" the trail that Inman followed, and "feel" what he and Ada felt. Surprisingly, this former English teacher loved the way Frazier punctuated the dialogue - understated, but effective, and just the way a storyteller would write.
So why do I give it a "9", instead of a "10"? I was a little confused by some lack of detail, like Monroe's church affiliation - just what was an "assembly" in 1864? A map covering the land Inman walked would have been helpful for the geography enthusiasts (I had to get out a map of North Carolina to find Salisbury); and a glossary for Frazier's mountain terms would have been a real bonus for those of us not from North Carolina.
Did these minor complaints keep me from enjoying the book? Heck no, and I can't wait for Frazier's next novel - I may even reread Cold Mountain, or one of his travel books - and I'll surely read his next book before reading any of its reviews. I am so glad I read these reviews AFTER I read the book!

Hiddenness and Manifestation: What Is Really Happening When God Doesn't Seem to Be Present?: Pt. 1 (, by Graham Cooke

Hiddenness and Manifestation is an interactive journal and book number one in Graham Cooke's Being With God series. These books are filled with great teaching and interactive exercises, making them ideal for both personal and small group study. In Hiddenness and Manifestation, Graham Cooke looks at the seasons of God's presence. Why is it that sometimes God's presence is so overtly with us, yet at other times seems strangely absent? What is God doing during those times? Is it our fault? Has He withdrawn from us for some reason? These are some of the questions that are answered as the "hiddenness" of God is illustrated from the Scriptures. An absolute must-read for anyone who is struggling in the dark night of the soul, or feeling distant from the Lord. Incredibly encouraging, gentle, and life-bringing!

From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up–Retro may sell, but the flatly dated '50s look to the superfluous illustrations here and the regurgitated words of the late motivational speaker will fail to sell teens on the advice offered by Carnegie's daughter (and Chairman of the Board of Dale Carnegie & Associates, Inc.). Although purporting to show girls the most powerful ways to influence others, defuse arguments, admit mistakes, and make self-defining choices, the real advice here is about getting other people to do what you want them to. Readers are encouraged to step back from problematic relationships, write out analytical lists of facets of the problem from both sides, and then outline the most persuasive arguments to persuade the other party that your solution will be mutually beneficial. The reasoning is often muddy and couched in careful terms–negotiation, never manipulation. While the pointers on being a good listener, keeping a positive outlook, and admitting one's mistakes are useful, the sobering dilemmas of many teens' lives are never addressed, such as social drinking, drug use, pressure to have sex, date rape, eating disorders, and physical or emotional abuse. Carnegie's imagined audience appears to be the fictitious '50s girls of the illustrations, dreaming of winning Miss Congeniality, rather than today's young women facing serious, even life-threatening, issues and choices. In stark contrast, Mindy Morgenstern's The Real Rules for Girls (Girl Pr, 2000) pairs up-to-date, nonjudgmental, readable advice with a stunning layout of black-and-white photos from the '50s and '60s, effectively using visual appeal to sell her message of respect for self and others.–Joyce Adams Burner, Hillcrest Library, Prairie Village, KS

Chapter One

If you want to gather honey, don't kick over the beehive.

-- Dale Carnegie

Imagine waking up one morning only to discover that every move you made -- from the clothes you picked out to the way you greeted your parents and friends to the questions you answered in class -- was recorded on a giant scoreboard for everyone to see. Although you realize that your score is changing how people see you (just like theirs is changing how you see them), you can't quite figure out which choices are increasing your tally and which aren't. In fact, you're beginning to wonder if your place in the world is decided totally at random. It sounds like some kind of nightmare, right? Unfortunately, it's not. Every day, girls find themselves navigating just such a world: school. There are few times in life that we find ourselves more aware of divisions like being in or out, us or them, cool or hopelessly uncool -- and so constantly reminded of where we fall on the continuum.

A recent study looked at students in grades six through ten. Among researchers' findings was that nearly 30 percent of students surveyed had experienced bullying, either as a victim, a perpetrator, or both. As alarmed as I was to hear this statistic, none of the girls we interviewed for this book even appeared surprised -- except to say they would have thought the number was higher. Many of them shared their own experiences, including Julie, age 14:

There was a girl in my class named Marie that everyone makes fun of. She's a total perfectionist and always uses the full hour to take a test that the rest of the class finishes in ten minutes. She's obsessed with ballet and all she ever wanted to talk about was her dance classes. Also, it was kind of the way she looked. I tried to be nice to her, but I also participated in teasing her. She laughed at herself and didn't let people know that she was hurt by what they said about her, but her mom told my mom that she cried every day after school. When my mom confronted me about it, I felt terrible. I told her that I tried sticking up for her, but it was hard. You want people to like you and I didn't want to become a target by sticking up for her. I know how horrible that is. I've been teased before, too....

From Julie's story, we see that she falls into the "both" category, experiencing teasing both as a participant and a victim. It seems unbelievable that someone who knows how horrible it feels to be singled out and ridiculed could ever take part in doing it to someone else. But if we look closely at Julie's words, we can see that she isn't really putting herself in Marie's shoes, regardless of her past experience. If Julie were truly empathizing with Marie, she wouldn't be able not to stick up for her. Rather, Julie is responding to her mom's criticism. Dale Carnegie once said, "Criticism is futile. It puts a person on the defensive and usually makes him strive to justify himself." Or, in this case, herself.

Actually, he felt so strongly about criticism that he always taught the following principle first: Don't criticize, condemn, or complain. It may seem obvious why we shouldn't follow this path when we look at Julie's example. She is indulging in all three big Cs: criticizing Marie, condemning her for her looks and personality, and complaining that she herself can't do anything to help. As tempting as it may be to think that we would never act in such a way, this kind of thinking is, in itself, a form of criticism. We're not here to judge Julie. Dale Carnegie believed the following: "Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain -- it takes character and self-control to be understanding and forgiving." We can, however, learn from her. We all know how rotten it feels to be on the receiving end of an unkind word, but Julie's example also shows us how ugly it can be to know you've hurt someone else. No one wants to see themselves as a cruel bully -- or someone too cowardly to go against the crowd. You don't have to make the same mistake yourself; by finding ways to be less critical of others as well as learning how to use negative energy to your advantage, anyone can learn how to deal with tough situations.

Giving Up Judgment

In high school it's an everyday occurrence to be present when someone is being made fun of or gossiped about and there's probably not a single person who isn't guilty of it themselves.

-- Lily, R.I.

It's one thing to know we should be empathetic, but it's another to actually be empathetic. We're not talking about anything revolutionary here: people have been telling you all your life to "do unto others as you would have done to you," right? So why is it so hard for us to stop and put ourselves in another person's shoes? Maybe it's because the stereotypes we carry around in our heads are a sort of security blanket when we get right down to it. It's a lot easier to make sweeping assumptions about how jocks are dumb, cheerleaders are shallow, and members of the chess club are dorks than to consider each person as an individual -- an individual who would no more want to be regarded (or disregarded) as a two-dimensional stereotype than we would. The truth is that the bullying we see everywhere at school and even in the workplace would end tomorrow if everyone from age eight to 108 tried always and honestly to see things from another person's perspective.

This is not to say that you should give up all the opinions, ideas, and perspectives that make you wonderfully, uniquely you. There's a big difference between judgments or stereotypes and constructive criticism that comes from a place of genuine goodwill toward another person. Sound confusing? Look at it this way: even if some truth exists in your complaints about people, snapping at them over their faults -- or worse, humiliating them -- won't get you very far when it comes to changing their behavior. Dale Carnegie took the example of the world-famous psychologist B. F. Skinner: "He proved through his experiments that an animal rewarded for good behavior will learn much more rapidly and retain what it learns far more effectively than an animal punished for bad behavior....Later studies have shown that the same applies to humans. By criticizing, we do not make lasting changes and often incur resentment." Sound crazy? Before you answer, take this quick quiz to see if you know the difference between constructive and destructive criticism.

Your best friend shows up at school with a nightmare haircut. You:

a) Head to the bathroom with her to see if parting her new 'do differently would make it a little more flattering.

b) Remind her it will grow out...eventually.

c) Wait until you're in the crowded cafeteria to tell her she should speed to the mall after school. You hear there's a big hat sale going on.

You love daisies, but your boyfriend shows up with a bouquet of roses on your anniversary. You:

a) Gush over the flowers and tell him they're beautiful -- you can remind him how much you like daisies some other time.

b) Thank him and tell him that next to daisies, roses are your favorite.

c) Tell him that if he ever listened to a word you said, he'd know you adore daisies and think roses are totally cliché.

Your tone-deaf sister plans to audition for the high school musical. You:

a) Invite your musically gifted friend over to give her some quick voice coaching.

b) Suggest she wait and audition for next semester's (nonmusical) play.

c) Ask her when Les Misérables became a comedy.

Your mom overcooks the roast again. You:

a) Eat it anyway. It won't kill you.

b) Push it around on your plate to make it look like you've eaten some and sneak a bowl of cereal later.

c) Ask her if she wants you to chip a tooth by continuing to try to eat this.

There are two truths about criticism: everyone's a critic (at least occasionally) and no one likes a critic (even occasionally). Sometimes what we offer as a helpful observation will come across as a judgment. And, if we don't choose our words carefully, what we intend as a constructive criticism can have the impact of a wrecking ball. But unless you've got a chronic case of foot-in-mouth disease, such misfires should be genuine miscommunications and shouldn't happen very often. So, if people routinely flinch before you speak -- and you answered "b" or "c" to any of the above -- it may be time to muzzle your inner pit bull.

A good rule of thumb is before you say something harsh, consider how you would feel if someone said the same thing to you. Sure, we all get angry. People do and say insensitive things all the time. But look what happens when we dish out negativity.

One time a girl in my high school criticized me on what I was wearing. She said that I looked ugly in it. I reacted by telling her to shut up and go away. I felt horrible, ugly, hurt, and angry all at once. I tried to hold in all my emotions, and all the hurt turned to hate. I hated her.

-- Beth, 17, Pa.

Ack! We definitely don't want to end up on either side of this scenario. That's not to say you can never suggest how others might do things better. It's just that when you do so, you should find a way to ensure your words are received in the generous spirit you intended for them. Before you open your mouth, make sure your intentions really are generous. Ask yourself:

  • Is the thing I'm about to criticize something that the person can or would want to change? (Hint: This pretty much rules out comments on the way a person looks, talks, walks, laughs, or dresses. Before you cross into that territory, check your motive. Why are you saying this? Your words will likely have zero

  • benefit to either you or your target, will be needlessly hurtful, and may cost you a friend or earn you a lasting enemy.)

  • Am I about to call attention to something that is

  • possible or easy to correct?

  • Could my words possibly deter this per...

Changing my life.
By BP2
My Dad gave me a copy of this when I graduated highschool in the 90s but I wasn't "ready" for it yet, I don't even think I read it to be honest. Now I'm 37 and realizing that I've put my personal growth on the back burner for entirely too long. I had pretty much given up on making new adult friends. I had actually self-diagnosed myself with Asperger's because I was having such a difficult time trying to figure out why people (including myself) do the things that do. The realization that my marriage was being effected by my nearly empty toolbox of social skills promoted me to take personal responsibility and shoulder the blame myself for once instead of blaming everyone around me for everything. I grew up with a hypercritical Mother so I think I had promised myself that I would never be criticized again, even if that meant writing people off the instant I felt like I had made myself vulnerable enough to be hurt by them.

I couldn't find the copy that my dad gave me so I ordered a new one and chapter 1 alone is changing the way I look at EVERYTHING. I've been plagued with mild depression/anxiety for 20 years and I'm realizing that I've developed some unhealthy defense mechanisms to cope with these issues. I never turned to drugs or alcohol, but the fortress-like walls I've constructed to deal with criticism (real or perceived) aren't much better for me. I've re-read and taken notes on the first section of the book several times now and my wife is noticing and she seems quite relieved, i had no idea I could impact another persons life so strongly.

Like I said, I am only getting started with the book and it has already helped me enough to warrant a 5-star rating. This book has stood the test of time for a reason and I can see why now. The strategies are applicable to and helpful in all aspects of my life so far, from my marriage to my job, and even to the way I interact with clerks in gas stations. I've read numerous self help books in the past, seen a therapist for 3 years, been through the gauntlet of antidepressants, etc, and until now I thought I was wasting my time. I've been learning things all along, but I never learned how to actually apply the things I had learned until now. This book speaks my language and if your background sounds even remotely similar I have a feeling that you'll agree.

but I found that it could be easy for a person to react quickly to conflicts
By Krystine
In my honest opinion, several principles in this book are repeated around the book. I don't see it as a disadvantage, because repetition is the key to learning. I did think several of the principles explained in the book are common sense, but I found that it could be easy for a person to react quickly to conflicts. This book has taught me the importance of staying in control and how beneficial it is to be in control of our behaviors and act in a way of service to others. The examples described in the book made it simpler to understand the concepts that Dale is teaching. I recommend this book if you would like to improve your skills with people. This book is especially beneficial for those who are working on their businesses and close relationships.

This book is divided into four parts. The first half of the book discusses techniques in handling people and how to have people like you. The final half of the book gives instructions about how to win people to our own thinking and how to be a leader by changing people without offending them or causing resentment.

In the first part of the book, it is divided into three principles. The first principle emphasizes the importance of avoiding criticism and he describes working with people as: working with people of logic. He further describes complaining and criticizing as a foolish task to do and how it takes a person of character to understand, forgive, and have self-control. Principle # 2 describes the importance of honest and sincere appreciation. Within this principle he describes the importance of ending our own thinking of accomplishments and desires. Instead, we must put our focus on the other person's good qualities. If being sincere, this will cause people to cherish them in their minds, even years later. The third principle involves influencing the other person to want, but not in a way that is manipulative. With this principle, he describes the importance of self-expression and connects it to the importance of thinking in terms of the other person, so that they come up with your ideas on their own, which they will like more.

Within the second part of the book, it teaches six principles. The first describes how critical it is to become interested in other people because you will make more friends compared to having others interested in you. When he moves onto the second principle, he explains the importance to smile in a heartwarming way because it will brighten the lives of those who see it. Dale then describes the importance to recall a person's name in the third principle. He gives tips on how to remember and then explains how people enjoy the sound of their own name. The fourth principle is about being a good listener and encouraging those to talk about themselves. He then goes onto to explain again that people are more interested in talking about themselves instead of others. He further explains this point in principle five: Talk in terms of the other person's interests. The final step is to sincerely make the other person feel important because this is the "deepest urge in human nature."

Dale describes in the third part of the book the steps to have a person think in terms of your own thoughts. He then explains that it is better to avoid arguments and to show respect for other people's opinions and never tell them they are wrong. because it will further push them away. If there is fault in your own behavior, Dale explains to immediately admit you're wrong without any doubts. If you are upset, he explains to sit down and counsel together, and if there are differences, understand it. Even in some differences, there will be points of agreement. He then explains the importance of agreement and having the person say "yes," at least twice. You doing this by looking into the other person's viewpoint and asking questions that cause them to agree. It is essential to have friends do the talking and have them excel us, instead of excelling them. When this occurs, they will feel important. To further the notion of feeling important, it is important to have the individual create their own ideas. He deepens this idea by asking questions such as, "Why should he or she want to do it?" and then being sympathetic towards their ideas. In order to catch a person's attention, you must dramatise the ideas you have. If all else fails, he explains the importance of competition and how it drives people to feel important and empowered to work efficiently and effectively.

In the final part of the book, Dale again discusses the importance of beginning with praise and honest appreciation. When someone makes a mistake, call to their mistakes indirectly. This can be done my making their mistakes your own and explaining the importance of fixing it and why it gave you a disadvantage. He then explains the importance of asking questions that direct the person you’re speaking to, to obtain your idea on their own. He emphasizes the importance of having the person be saved from embarrassment, and then explains the importance of praise again, even if it is small. Dale then gives examples of giving a person a reputation that makes them better, in order to have the person be motivated to improve. After giving someone a reputation to live up to, encourage the person to correct their faults and make them happy to do the actions you suggest.

It's my favorite book of my life...
By Levent
It's an excellent book written on this subject. In fact, I've been reading this book for more than 20 years and applying it to my daily life my, business life etc, you name it. The result is incredible! Yes, to be able to learn something you have to apply it (do it, develop strategies and habits) in your daily life otherwise, you loose it in a very short time. Why I bought another one? Because, the one that I've been reading and applying for years was so old that I wanted to renew it. Because, I will be still reading and using it as a guide in my future life. I will go through it at least two three times in a year.
I believe that this book is the bestseller on it's subject for years and years. But, do not expect that your life will change immediately when you read it. Because, you are the one who will change your life. Because, you will realize that you have enormous improvement opportunities in your relationships but,you have to take actions by yourself immediately. If you really want/need a change why don't you start with yourself.

I definitely recommend this book to everybody.

“I tried to push him back, but he was too strong, like iron. Suddenly his head snapped up like he heard something; he craned his neck to listen and then he let out a hiss. He kissed next to my ear and softly whispered, “I think breaking you will be much more fun. I’ll see you soon.” And then he added, as if an afterthought, “Tell him hello for me.” Then I felt his mouth lock onto the base of my neck and something pierce my flesh. It hurt. Despite my panic, after a few moments, my heart slowed, and everything became distorted as the blackness came for me.”

After breaking up with her boyfriend, seventeen-year old Aleria “Ali” Hayes finally feels liberated. Unfortunately, her ex’s buddies are not making it easy on her. When his friends harass her one night, a mysterious stranger, Bowen, steps in to rescue her. But just as this new relationship seems to be taking off, Ali is attacked by something far worse than spiteful high school boys. When she awakes, her eyes are opened to a world where gods still walk the earth, where vampires and other immortals fight for supremacy— and where fate may be stronger than free will. Now, Ali must decide who she can trust, and whether the world of mortals is worth saving at all.

Great start to a series and author debut - Spoiler free review
By R.L.K.
I'm a big reader of many genres (YA, high fantasy, mystery, etc.) and this novel stands out to me. I enjoyed that the author, writing in YA, mentioned books and plays young adults and adults alike are like to have read. Literary references without pretension was a big highlight for me. It made me remember a number of required reading books I was given in High School. I also liked that Aleria was older (17-18 years old) and an AP student which allows Woods to write on the older YA side. Smart choice in my opinion. Makes for far more interesting internal dialogue than the average YA that can so often become "woe is me" and over dramatic. No hint of that here.
The Unintended did a good job of introducing the reader to Aleria's world and the world she ultimately finds herself. I also found the vampire mythology to be interesting and one of the more unique takes I've read (or seen). So often in literature and film, vampires are simply magic or the origins don't matter but Woods' take is more realistic and actually made me research on my own. Aleria asked the questions I was thinking. (Hope to hear more about it in the later books!!!)
Pacing was pretty great throughout. By Chapter 3, I cared about the Ali and was interested where the book would go. By Chapter 6, there is no way I could have put The Unintended down. Again, Aleria asks the questions everyone would ask in her situation which helps the world unfold at a steady, digestible pace. Not everything all at once, but one morsel at a time.
I liked that the ending gave resolution to enough of the questions so that this story felt complete but raised enough questions that you don't loose interest by the end of the novel and feel like you have all the answers. Felt like just the tip of the iceberg. I obviously had my theories and ideas but her foreshadowing is not so obvious that it slaps you in the face. Surprises revealed at the end of the novel really are surprises, but looking back they shed light on so much of the story. I'm normally very perceptive with what is going to happen in books (you read often enough and that's what happens) and I was actually surprised by where Woods took the ending. (Don't want to spoil anything but if you read the book, you'll know what I'm talking about)
My only critic would be that there is a lot more talking than action in some sections but overall I think that was necessary to set everything the Watcher world. The Unintended definitely feels like the wind up to a much larger story.
Can't wait to start The Nexus tonight!
(I already read the included bonus material (two different POV's, which I won't spoil!!) and Ch. 1 of Nexus and am extremely hopeful that the books will only get better from here)

Everyone Should Read The Unintended!
By Kyle
I'm a busy guy. I'm picky as well. Something's gotta be pretty great to be worth my time and keep my attention. I'm not a huge reader for this reason. I'm the farthest thing from a Twihard or someone who's typically into any teen romance type stories, or someone who jumps on trendy band wagons, but The Watcher Series is totally different from anything else I've come across.

Why I like The Unintended:
1. Characters are grounded in reality. They are well-thought out with real motivations for their actions. You become invested in their lives and need to know what happens next.
2. It's an easy read. You can motor through this guy cover to cover and onto the next one. I did.
3. Unexpected twists and turns!
4. New and unique take on the vampire genre.

A few reviews of this book are super negative and you know what, some of these negative reviews do bring up decent points. But they're mislead. The Unintended might not be your favorite book of all time. But it's still more than worth reading and here's why: Coming from someone who has read the three books in this trilogy as well as the prequel, and is now even reading the final two books of the series (which aren't out yet at the time this review is being written), I can earnestly say that although The Unintended isn't the greatest masterpiece ever written, Robin Woods skillfully sets the ground-work for what develops into a rich, believable and captivating world with its own lore, deep history and most of all, engaging characters that will stick with you long after you turn the final page.

The scope of this series is so great that it has something for everyone. You seriously will not believe the places this story goes (so far beyond the high school drama of The Unintended). People have pointed out that the series doesn't come out with guns blaring, huge explosions and car chases. But what proper epic doesn't have humble beginnings? Lord of the Rings doesn't start on Mount Doom. There has to be a buildup. A quaint beginning helps the reader appreciate where a story ends up. With every new novel of the Watcher Series, Robin Woods somehow manages to outdo the previous one in every way, all the while getting darker and more mature the further the story progresses. The stakes become higher, the scale becomes grander and the story becomes more and more intense and rewarding to read and be a part of. Pick up this book. And don't stop there. Go onto The Nexus. You won't regret it. Don’t miss out on this series!

Bravo for the Unintended!
By SkyRose888
The Unintended (2nd Edition): The Watcher Series: Book OneRobin Woods' first installment of The Watcher Series, The Unintended caught me by surprise. I don't typically gravitate toward vampire stories, but this tale captivated and held my attention.

I was drawn to the setting of the story since it takes place near my hometown in Northern California (Campbell, CA) and I was entertained by such declarations as the police department being so well-armed that they had a tank in their arsenal. Following the story from the protagonist's point of view kept me engage, since Ali is a very likeable lead. She's entering her senior year of high school and is grounded in her beliefs; her maturity helps to drive the story forward. The author makes references to various literature classics, including Shakespeare and weaves them to parallel the storyline. This works well to cement Ali's intelligence and likeability. The suspected antagonist is introduced early enough to keep the reader engaged, and the love interest slides in seamlessly.

Although some tedious details involving secondary characters could have been left out, they were minor. A few of the characters, such as Ali's school friends, were underdeveloped, and unfortunately, there were too many of them. This wasn't a major flaw in anyway, but more of a minor distraction. All was balanced by the primary arc of the story.

The battle scenes are choreographed in minute detail and I savored these action sequences since they were well written. The author creatively weaves in various subplots and plants enough twists to fuel the series. Ali is enlightened and yet, there are enough unanswered questions to keep her vulnerable and desired. She is not positioned as a heroine, making her more relatable with an alluring mystery surrounding her; the author skillfully opens the door for a lot of discovery in future installments.

I found The Unintended by Robin Woods to be engaging and a fun escape. I can now consider myself a vampire book reader and fan of this dynamic saga. I was pleased the author included a sampling for Book II of The Watcher Series, The Nexus. Bravo!

Instructors Manuel is not different
By Stephen Warta
I ordered parts A-C of this literature series, the first two of which I found good. This third edition is an instructors edition, but it is no different than the other editions (at least to what I can tell).

Paulie Pastrami Achieves World Peace, by James Proimos

Paulie Pastrami can't whistle, he has trouble matching his socks, and he is usually picked last in sports. But he plans to achieve world peace before he turns eight.

Through simple acts of kindness--from reading to the trees and being nice to his little sister to cheering up the school principal and sharing cupcakes with strangers--Paulie learns that spreading peace isn't that hard after all.

From School Library Journal
Grade 1–3—How does a seven-year-old who has not yet mastered whistling achieve world peace? He begins with the easy stuff and works his way up. First, Paulie starts "being kind to small animals. Then bigger animals. And bigger. And bigger still." Then he apologizes to his sister. At school, he is nice to everyone, even the principal, and hands out cupcakes to help resolve conflicts. Having established peace at home and at school, he is ready to expand his horizons. With the help of his family he goes on a "world tour" around town with a van full of cupcakes to distribute to appreciative crowds. Although world peace is a serious issue, Proimos's tongue-in-cheek approach makes the "can do" message fun and child friendly. The text is short and snappy with only one or two sentences on most pages. The simple cartoon drawings, filled in with color, have attitude and personality that matches the tone of the text. Creative page layouts and artsy fonts give the illustrations added energy. This is a great read-aloud, especially for a unit about social issues or character development.—Donna Cardon, Provo City Library, UT

From Booklist
In spare, droll text and pictures that evoke Jules Feiffer’s work, this title offers an amusing look at compassion and the power of cupcakes. Young Paulie is “nothing special . . . no more special than you are,” but things change after he begins to connect with the natural world, showing kindness to animals and even “reading to trees.” Soon, Paulie moves on to people, making amends with his sister and sharing his lunch with a classmate; and when he discovers that cupcakes can resolve disputes, his peace-making ambitions grow. Together with his dad, he visits nearby businesses that have globally-themed names (Furniture World, Toy World), bringing “cupcakes and peace to all,” until he finally heads home for some well-deserved sleep. The peppy, colorful cartoon art incorporates witty, sometimes hyperbolic details. Some kids may miss the tongue-in-cheek, punny plays on world peace, but the positive story conveys how small, individual actions can have a large, ripple effect. Wry, sweet inspiration for spreading goodwill. Grades K-3. --Shelle Rosenfeld

About the Author
James Proimos has written and illustrated many books for children, including Patricia Von Pleasantsquirrel and the Johnny Mutton series. He has also created TV shows and written scripts for major animation studios.

Super cute and a MUST for the b-day recipient who wants "World Peace"
By LoriAnnR
I thought this was a lovely book. Paulie Pastrami is an endearing 8-year old character who outlines how he achieved World Peace - at the impressive age of 7. As the book outlines, he started off by being kind to small animals, watering flowers, listening to the river, and then turning his attention to mankind. This book is filled with little tidbits of wisdom such as apologizing when we do something wrong, listening more, sharing with others, offering compassion, working hard, finishing what we start, laughing at ourselves and crying with others. Paulie's determination to achieve World Peace (which he thinks he accomplished through giving away an enormous amount of cupcakes) is just one of those lovely "feel good" stories that ultimately sends home the basic message to kids that through kindness, compassion, and grace, regardless of our age, we ALL can achieve our own little bit of "World Peace" and make the lives of those we encounter a more pleasant and enjoyable experience. It's not "what" we give, it's that we give of ourselves.

My spouse ALWAYS states that he wants "World Peace" for his birthday and holidays. This year for his Birthday, our kids gave him this book along with a batch of cupcakes with the message "World Peace - Achieve the Dream"- Mission Accomplished!

Public Health in the British Empire: Intermediaries, Subordinates, and the Practice of Public Health, 1850-1960 (Routledge Studies in Moder

Over the last several decades, historians of public health in Britain’s colonies have been primarily concerned with the process of policy making in the upper echelons of the medical and sanitary administrations. Yet it was the lower level staff that formed the backbone of public health systems in the colonies. Although they constituted the bases of many colonies’ public health machinery, there is no consolidated study of these individuals to date. Public Health in the British Empire addresses this gap by bringing together historians studying intermediary and subordinate staff across the British Empire.

Along with investigating the duties and responsibilities of medical and non-medical intermediary and subordinate personnel, the contributors to this volume show how the subjectivity of these agents influenced the manner in which they discharged their duties and how this in turn shaped policy. Even those working as low level assistants and aids were able to affect policy design. In this way, Public Health in the British Empire brings into sharp relief the disaggregated nature of the empire, thereby challenging the understanding of the imperial project as an enterprise conceived of and driven from the center.
